Title: Adventure bikes Post by Ruttly on 09/08/24 at 20:38:07 Its been awhile since I been in the mountains. In two years it went from packs of Harleys to very few Harley’s on the road at all. Let’s say 10% of the bikes were Harleys and then a 10% of mixed styles of bikes. Maybe there was an event or ride(s) in the area but it was wall to wall adventure bikes of every brand , a lot of that Royal Enfield. Week before Labor Day almost 0 campers in campgrounds , NO fires of any kind in the area , so no campers! We had a cabin across the river from the road so I all I was seeing was bikes with 3 aluminum boxes loaded for the road ! |

A person can get two adventure bikes for the cost of one Harley , and the Adventure bikes are more fun to boot ! :) The new RE-450 Himalayan or the Kawasaki Eliminator are a lot of bike for a little bit of money ! Plenty of get up and go, tubeless tires, computer shows MPG, Miles to empty, it's got a clock, Added bar risers, now I don't hafta put the package on top of the tank to reach them without being bent over. Redline is 10,500 RPM, 10.5 to 1 compression, but doesn't require The Good Stuff. It'll go faster than I am willing to experience. I saw 9,500 rpm, but I didn't have the balls for sixth gear,, A better rider would be able to see shortcomings. I'm really pleased with it. And mounting the milk crate was Easy. It's got two bolts holding the rear seat mount to the fender. The female threads are very structurally mounted, so two bolts through the bottom and the crate is On there. The frame invites add ons. Like Protectors, in case it falls down,, |

They have enough comfort and power to cruise the highways. And they handle well enough to get through county roads, canyons, and dirt roads. But, most of them are too tall, heavy, and powerful to do much more than dirt roads. But you wouldn't want to munch highway miles on a dual-sport bike either so I guess it just comes down to how you use it. I think they look stupid and that's why I hate them. But that might be the only thing I hate about them. Wait... I like ADV bikes. |

I recently bought a Suzuki DR 200 dual purpose thing sight unseen, I thought I had bought a very small bike and was disappointed when I first clapped eyes on it. I am not a tall bloke, but at 5'8" I would not consider myself vertically challenged either. I can get both feet on the ground sitting on it, but only just. I am disappointed with the height, for a 200cc bike it's big, it makes my 650 Savage look tiny. I think the name Adventure bike sounds stupid, it's as if they think they have invented something new. |

The thought of tipping over on a forest trail on one of those 1200cc. 450+lb. so called "off road" monsters, with my feet dangling six inches off the ground is not something I want to contemplate. My old HD Sportster is by no strech of the imagination a dirt bike but it actually does pretty well on dirt and gravel roads as long as I remember that I haven't been 20 years old for a h*ll of a long time now. :) |

[/quote] ;D Those belly button high bikes can not be taken seriously. I can't understand how they find buyers for them. Literally every road around where I live is a gravel road, if I go anywhere at all it involves at least a three mile drive on an often graded gravel road. When the roads have just been graded they are not rideable for at least three days. I agree with guys here that the whole category has gotten too big to be practical for real off-road. I guess if your 20 something, 6’3”, built like a body builder, and take ballet classes, they’re probably okay for off-road. While it might be okay to say a 509lb cruiser or standard bike is middleweight, that’s no middleweight for trying to manage it off road. I love the category and concept, but it’s gotten ridiculous. My very first bike was a Honda Elsinore MR175. A 2-stroke “trail bike” as they were called. It didn’t do anything particularly great, but it was tough and bullet proof.
