Title: S40 Pricing......jeez-louise!!!!!
Post by zipidachimp on 10/18/24 at 03:27:28

Trying to find a low milage late model, to transfer all my good mods to, and prices are to the moon and staying there!  Prices below the border are just as bad. Gonna be a long winter.
Cheers!  >:(

majority in $4k to $5k region, higher mileage at $2.5k +.
10 years ago I bought 2 at $3k, foolishly sold one.
Cheers! 8-)

Yeah prices have gone up in the past decade.

But so has the age of the bikes! $3k for a 6 yr old versus $3k for a 16 yr old ! OK if you're a seller, not so hot for a buyer !
Cheers!  8-)

I see them listed for 2-3K in my area but there aren't as many on the market.

Ten years ago I would see 2-3 of them listed on Craigslist every week.  Folks were buying them and then choosing to get something bigger/faster/comfier or decided riding wasn't a good thing for them.  Now they seldom come up for sale - and a whole lot of them are beat up bobber conversions.

Here is a current 2002 for $1,900 with 3,547 miles on it:
https://cincinnati.craigslist.org/mcy/d/pleasant-plain-suzuki-savage-650/7793805351.html

And a 1995 with 5,822 miles for $1,995.  (Funny the price is $1 per year).

My neighbor is a financial advisor, and he believes that with the increasing cost of living - a lot of folks are going to be getting rid of toys soon.  He predicts prices for used cars/boats/motorcycles/campers and other non-essential items are likely to get cheaper soon.  This is particularly true for those toys that require folks to pay to keep things at a storage facility and pay insurance and taxes on toys they seldom use.

When one comes up that is a late model - they often are asking close to $4,000.

Another thing to keep in mind is the sizeable migration off Craigslist for used items.  The majority of Craigslist migrators moved to FB Marketplace.

I don't believe this has much effect on pricing, but it does effect one's ability to find alternatives if they only use Craigslist.

I think you're onto something there. I just checked FB Marketplace and there are 8 near me.

I bought my '08 in 2014 with 2700 miles for $2500. At the time I heard of better deals, but this was $ well spent!
One of those I show above is a '12 with only 19 miles for 2K!

I hate to admit it but the 'cool guys' seem to have moved to FBM. Dinos like me prefer CL, because we've had luck in the past.
By the way, if selling, would you ever welcome a buyer in your home? Not me!
Cheers!  8-)
ps: that Denver market looks hot! :D

I've used FBM a lot in recent times, clearing out some stuff from storage. Tried the local Nextdoor app too, but get way more hits on FBM. It's the only thing I use FB for.
Other than doom scrolling Instagram, this forum is the extent of my "social media".

Possible. I certainly hope so. I would love a heritage softail but I am not paying 10,000 for a 20 year old bike. I don't think prices are going down. Unfortunately, with stricter and stricter requirements from government agencies, cars and bikes are changing overtime. In the opinion of many, they are losing their soul. I would say that this adds desire to the older vehicles.

Look at the used truck market. Parents got me a 2001 Tacoma for $1500 in 2016 (I was 16). Sold it for $2500 in 2017. That Truck would be $5,000 plus easily today in 2024. I worked in a transmission shop for a while. Almost every new truck has a crappy transmission. Ford 10 speeds are complete garbage they are getting sued over them. We charged over 6000 for a rebuild. Ford dealers struggled to get them in. Customers waiting months for a transmission. Chevy did a deal with Ford. They got a similar 10 speed design now. Converters cost darn near 1000 dollars for em.

Now consider an older truck. Simple 4 speed Chevy or Ford. The shop I worked at could do a complete overhaul rebuild with a tougher converter on most 4 speeds for around $1400-2000 depending on model. With a 1 year warranty. So, for under 2 grand, you could put your truck back on the road for another 10+ years. This is why old trucks are getting so valuable. People would rather maintain a $10000 early 00s Chevy than deal with an new truck that's 50,000 dollars and will be guaranteed to have major issues within a few years of work. Seriously, we had many 10 speed fords coming in after 3 years of work. Insane. Don't even get me started on the Chevy 8 speeds.

Look up "Mr Darcy and the Old Man" on YouTube. Great retro-focused motorcycle channel. They don't really do sports bikes, just modern classics and what not. They recently did a video where they included their random conversations with young people passing by the bikes that they were reviewing. These groups of young people admired the modern classics. When asked, they preferred them to the modern bike look. Why are manufactures not focusing more on classic styled motorcycles? With Royal Enfield increasing in popularity amongst young people, you would think Honda would bring their cb350 to the US.  This will keep the used market alive and healthy. The few options we do have new, besides royal enfield, are pricy. Kawasaki wants over 5000 dollars for their new 230cc retro classic. For that price, they could just buy an S40 and get way more bike... Don't even both looking at new Triumph prices.

I do realize I am rambling on, but I don't see the used market going down at all. If anything, it will remain stable. As the cost of living rises, people would rather buy an older used vehicle than a new one.

Toyota resale value is crazy.  I have a 99 4Runner Base with a stick that I put just over 500,000 miles on.  I didn't rebuild the engine until 486,000.  I get offers to buy it all the time because of the manual transmission and non-powered everything.

I would have never thought people would dump 5-6k on a half a million miles beat up 4Runner - but then again my cousin right out of high school makes $24 an hour at Taco Bell and over 1K a month online just mentioning businesses on a podcast so 5k to him would be like $500 to me when I was in high school.  3 months savings could buy him a Savage on FB easy.

Oh for sure. Toyotas are sweet, and manual is the way to go for longevity. Most reliable truck I had was actually a Ford believe it or not. Manual. 300 Inline 6. Best engine ever made. Regret selling it. Could haul anything I needed. I foresee those old I6 Fords to skyrocket in value. The 7.3's already started to go up in value. N/A diesel with great reliability.

That Ford inline 6 was a beast. Bulletproof.
My best friend in high school had a Maverick (the car, not the little weird truck they sell now) with the inline 6 and 4 speed on the column.
Kinda like Jeeps older inline 6. It just goes and goes. Those Jeeps invariably start leaking oil at 60K though. Like clockwork.

One of my daughters bought a ‘71 Maverick with an I6, but it was only about 220 CI.
The I6 in the Ford truck I’m familiar with was a 300 CI I6, and that was a strong engine.  Ford had a range of engines for pickups:
140, 170, 221, 240. 272, 289, 292, 300.

I saw this on Facebook today. Obviously, this is highest price scenario, but it proves that the demand for old vehicles is very high.

Dodge Slant 6 was pretty good too. Friend of mine had a Dodge Aspen. Ran better than a lot of cars several decades newer. And his was a rust bucket.

The Slant 6 is a torque machine. I had a Duster ,72ish? in 75. 3 on the tree, absolute giggle factory.
