Title: oil sight floaty
Post by MonkeysSuzuki on 11/05/25 at 08:50:34

It looks like an 8mm section of the oil level sight glass sealant came dislodged from the seal and is floating in the oil at the sight. It`s still attached to the sight glass seal, it`s just floating there antagonizing me. I am concerned that this piece will break free and become a blockage at an oil passage. I would have to take the clutch case cover off and reinstall the sight glass. Do I do that or take a chance the "floaty" doesn`t ever break free or if it does it gets trapped by the oil filter? While I have the cover off I could check if I need to do anything to my Verslavy timing chain tensioner I put in 2 years ago when I rebuilt the clutch.

Can you post a picture?

I don't see the chunk of sealant ("floaty") as much of a threat.  It should be fairly soft so it shouldn't damage any of the gears in the primary or the transmission.  It can't really get into the pressurized portion of your oil system because it can't get through the suction strainer on your oil pump.

What concerns me is that you can see the stuff in the bullseye. My observation has been that the sealant is on the inner side of the metal plate behind the clear plastic sight window. How did the sealant get between the metal plate and the clear plastic.  Is there a chance that the metal plate fell off?  That would concern me.  Can you still see the metal plate behind the clear plastic?

See how the bead of sealant is on the inner side of the metal plate.

Can you see this perforated metal plate behind the clear plastic sight window?  If that metal plate is no longer there, I suggest you remove the clutch cover and find the metal plate.

Is this the same bike you ask about in this post?

Replaced clutch plates on my wife`s 2007 Boulevard while I had the clutch  side case off to install a Verslavy cam chain tensioner. I noticed the oil level window seal is coming loose. I`m thinking of putting some Blue PermaTex around the sight glass. I think I can get thin enough of a bead to help hold the thin gasket in enough to prevent leaks. Blue PermaTex or is there something else that would do better?

The white sealant often goes bad.  I just dig it out, clean the area well to remove the oil and get a surface sealant will stick to, and use a good RTV sealant (I use Suzukibond).  Be sure to give it adequate time to cure before you put oil back into the crankcase....leaving the cover off for a few days helps for better curing.

I wonder, ....  do folks know what they can do to promote rapid curing of RTV silicone sealant?    It's moisture!  , ... and a little heat.

When mine goes bad , I’ll put a floating eye ball in there before I glue it back in. It might make it easier to see the level at a glance. Maybe some of that ultra bright plastic they use for gun sights , something you can see with dirty oil. Sounds like a fun project.
