Question on MPH and correct gear
07/17/04 at 10:50:23
Will I hurt my transmission by doing 30MPH in city traffic in 2nd gear? I have a 2002 Savage.

It won't *hurt* it...yet a lower rpm (3rd gear) if you are just cruising and don't really need instant power will help the engine to last longer. More rpm = more piston speed = more wear and tear on the cylinder walls and piston rings (not like our low compression low output motor really has to worry much about it...but still). Also you will probably use more gas in 2nd at 30mph than 3rd at 30mph.
In the end....its your bike and if you want to ride it that way do it!

The LS has such a strong engine that down-shifting on city roads is often optional once you get in 3rd. It won't hurt the engine to plonk along at low revs, just don't lug it low enough to get pinging. Riding around in 2nd @ 30mph is quite unnecessary with this tractor.
If you get surging or rough running at low revs, do the plastic spacer and airscrew mod.

No, it won't really hurt it, but I myself would prefer to be in 3rd or even 4th (on level road and depending on traffic).
Mine will even pull along on level road at 35 mph in 5th with a nice thumper tone to it (not lugging)...but mine isn't completely stock either.

2nd gear at 30mph drops you right on peak torque ideal for overtaking.

SAVAGES HAVE A 94mmBORE AND A 94mm STROKE AND THE CAM CHAIN ADJUSTER IS AT THE BOTTOM ,AND THEY CAN BE VERY HARD ON CAM CHAINS SO ITS BEST TO KEEP THE ENGINE RUNING SMOOTH AND NOT LUMPY OR CHUGGING . 94mm STROKE IS PRETTY LONG . 4 SPEEDS WILL RUN DIFFERENT THAN 5 SPEEDS . SO SMOOTH AND LONG SEEMS TO SUIT IT BEST

An engine like that with such a short stroke would be anemic unless the redline was much higher.

I view 83mm as a long stroke, it has 37mm inlet and 32mm exhaust valves, FCR41 carb and a custom made pipe. Grunts from 2500 and revs like a two stroke to the 7500red line.

The piston speeds of the two engines at max revs are within 2% of each other.

I just checked today (never paid attention before), and the Savage is doing right at 3500 RPMs at 30 MPH in 2nd gear.
The Savage also does 3500 RPMs at 50 MPH in 5th gear, so there really shouldn't be any problem with what you ask.

There is a difference between "can do" and "always do". Mine will do it, but of course to have decent acceleration and pull under load, I don't make a habit of it.

BTW - I checked the tach again, and it seems that "chugging" begins at around 2000 RPMs.....
