For people who want a higher cruising speed and don't have clearance problems (saddle bags) it might be worth your while to measure your 'bike and see if it will take a 150/90/15 (Bridgestone G702, Dunlop D404 + K425). The 150 is 5mm per side wider and 23mm up on radius compared to standard, that is 9mm up on the 140/90.
The 150 will give 59mph at peak torque versus 55, and 80.5 instead of 74.8 at peak power.

Have you done this? Are there any downsides? Was reading in
Proficient Motorcycling
that changing tire size can affect steerability, which could be good or bad. Just curious if there are any issues with it.

That 150/90 change on the Savage would be barely noticeable....but remember that any rear wheel change on the Savage affects the speedo accuracy.

I went from 90 to 98mm tire height on My KLX and Greg is right, no noticable difference.

A larger tire will probably fit mine now, since I removed the saddle bag supports.

Hey Greg, will You have room for the extra width and height of the 150/90 tire, have You measured, then again tires aren't always what the sidewall says they are, My 140/70/17 is nearer 150 than 140

I am running a 140/90 now and had to shorten one bag support bolt head. Runs fine. Not certain what 150 would cause me to have to do and keep bag supports but I think I could get it to happen.

I will probably find out this winter, as my Dunlop is wearing thin. I bet I'll have to have more rubber by spring.

Me too, I got 4400 miles on the original tire and the center is thinning quite a bit. I spent an hour surfing for new rubber the other night. I guess it will come down to most bite for the buck. The IRCs are OK. I am game for a taller tire than the stocker. I have some concerns if you install more compliant shock of bottoming on fender and saddle bag supports. Lots of name brand tires to choose from. Good "press" for the Dunlops.
I like the 21' wheel on a buddies Vulcan, I would try that mod if i got ambitious.

I like the 21" wheel idea too. Just have to find a way to make the fender fit.
