I found this link on the Volusia Owners League pages...
http://www.suzukicycles.org/index.html
It's pretty nice and has some cool LS650 stuff like these scans from an old Suzuki sales brochure. Neat site...

I liked this ad so much that I've thought about it all day. I assume that this was an early ad, maybe '86?
Did you notice how it describes the exhaust as a "throaty rumble"?
I haven't heard anyone call a late model exhaust any more than sounding like a lawn mower. So did the exhaust change over the years?
Also, it say that the seat height is 25.8". Did they get taller too?
How about the weight? It says 332 lbs when all our are 352 or so for CA models.
So did the added weight and higher seat come from the heavier muffler that snuffed out the "thoaty rumble" to satisfy the EPA?
Were these the specs from a 400 Savage mentioned in the ad?

Yes, the 80's bikes were much louder. The later LS650's sound like scooters because of stricter EPA mandates. I wonder if 80's mufflers are still in the parts pipeline?

Note the sway back seat on the '86 in the article. It appears that Suz added more padding and made it flatter in the later models.

Heavier muffler, and the 5th speed.

So, obviously I was asking for the obvious answer about the exhaust. I suspected that something changed along with the carb, but I haven't heard any Savages older than '96.
The older ones were nearly 2 inches lower than the new ones, too.

I haven't heard any of the newer Savages but mine is an '86 and I have to say I was at a light last night and ended up drowning out the H-D that was next to me!
