Farewell to me
10/28/04 at 20:17:21

[glow=red,2,300] [/glow]I got the great news yesterday that my place of employment for the last 8 years is shutting its door and moving to Mexico.  So...the descision to sell anything we can live without came up, and the Savage was on the list.  It will soon be in the Cycle Trader.  It's an 01 Silver/Blue with a Jardine pipe, HD fork bag, W&M saddle bags, 1/2 helmet, 9k miles, cover, Slipstreamer shield, and a Clymer manual.. It has all records  and receipts from when I bought it.  I'm asking $2700.  I really enjoyed it, and I had many unforgettable rides on it.  Maybe the next owner will have as much fun as I did. :'(

Come on, Man.  I know EXACTLY how you feel.  I know that things look pretty bleak, but try to keep the bike.

I worked in the textile industry for 9 years, while watching all my customers move to Mexico and other other places south.  I got laid off in May 2003 and spent 6 months out of work.  Since then, I've gotten 3 more jobs, but none as nice and I keep getting laid off for a lack of work...(I just got laid off last Monday, too)

(I could insert political complaints, but this isn't the place)

Anyway, selling your bike will only get you a small amount of cash that will only be temporary.  I still have my bike in spite of all the money I've lost....Start looking for a new job now.  You can still keep your bike, and it's cheaper on gas and insurance too.

Good luck.

SadSorry to hear about your misfortune man ... hang in there ... it always works out for the better if you are patient enough ... believe me I know, it ain't easy living in the "poorest" Province in Canada ... always gettin' the "poor mouth" from government and employers alike ... economy always on the verge of goin' off the rails, etc.
A Bike not being used don't "eat any bread" if ya get my drift. If you can't afford to Ride, put 'er in storage (change oil, remove battery, stabilize gas, etc.) until your fortunes come back around ... as I'm sure they will.
Good Luck!

SavageT;
I do appreciate how you feel. I've been there. After 21 years working for Mack Trucks at the Hagerstown Md Power Train manufacturing plant, my world came tumbling down when I was laid off in 1986, I sold my beloved Norton 750, the little money I got from that sale didn't help my finances at all. 9 years later I was recalled to work at Mack. Selling your beloved thumper will only make you sad and blue. Take the advise from a senior who's been there KEEP THE SAVAGE. Now and then you'll want to ride to clear your mind and renew your spirit.

Sorry to hear about your job. As far as the bike goes, I believe heavily in the wisdom of not selling a bike unless you've got another one waiting to be ridden.

best of luck

It will make 9 payments on the wife's goober mobile.  I'm in the air about it.  I have a new baby as well.  Hell....I may just keep it because it don't get any cheaper to fill up.  I spent 30 bucks today filling up the 4Runner.  And it wasn't even empty.  The Savage only cost 4 bucks.  I guess that would make sense to keep it.  I'll be in Lillian Texas tomorrow to ride a Ducati Multistrada.  A gentlemen from the dealership told me to come out and ride their demo Ducati.  I figured what the hell.  Sunny, if your ever on FM 917, drop in on Advanced Motorsports and check the place out.  It's like a Ducati museum inside.  The owner is a 6 time international road race champion.  And it looks like some of his old race bikes are in there.

Last November the wife got a New Beetle to replace the LTD.  She saved over $2000 in gas money this past year.  I am riding the Savage to work rather than driving the Camaro.  It is only 8 miles round trip but I will be saving (8miles/day * 5 days/week * 48weeks/year = 1920 miles/year.  60mpg vs. 8mpg = 208 gallone less gasoline @$2.30/gal) about $450 -- again just in gasoline.

The Brits were heavily into motorcycles in the '50's.  The 60's saw them prospering and parking the bikes and getting cars.  The gas crunch of the '70's had them digging the bikes out of the yard sheds and going back to riding.

Keeping the bike is economic good sense.

That it is a blast to ride is mere coincidence.   Wink

I decided as of today, that my bike is not for sale.  Ya'll have talked me out of it.  It's paid for, and it doesn't cost me anything to keep up.  My wife actually talked me into keeping it as well.  She said I had to wait forever to get a good bike and she hated to see me part with it.
