I just bought a 2005 S40 suzuki boulevard (the new name for the 650 thumper), and tried to get some info from the shop regarding breaking in.
I know to go easy on the engine till I hit the top speed, but how fast can I go at top speed?
Anyone has an idea regarding what the rpm would be at 50 60 and 70mph?
I'm looking to approach this breakin in conservatively (don't really expect to hit 70 during that period)... anyone cares to share how they did it?

I believe mine said to keep it under 65 mph for the first few hundred miles. I'm sure all the guys will chime in here in the next day or two and give you lots of info.

Precisely. You have a new bike and you should read your "MOM". That will not only tell you how to break in the engine, but it also gives a lot of information like tire inflation, maintenance schedules, and how to use the fuel pet_c_o_c_k. Before you ride, you should read.

BTW - during break in, you should not go "top speed".

Ride safe.

I was going to add that to my post but i didn't want to send mixed signals..

i announce at a racetrack, and run the track on practice nights.

all the racers break in the engines the run it hard way.

when a sprint car driver showed up on his buell i say howz getting on it he says "i'm following the factory break in policy".

so i think it's an issue of if you are going to be rebuilding it on a regular basis like you would a race machine. run it hard is the way.

for a longterm machine with no intention of ever tearing into it. follow the factory.

There is more truth to the mototuneusa method than one might think. Many moons ago when I started riding, a friend & I both bought a 250cc JAWA scooter. I broke in mine per the owners manual, to the letter, I was affraid that I would do some damage if I exceeded the recommended speeds. He broke his in using the s_ _t & git method, unknowingly similar to the mototuneusa method. His 250cc was MUCH faster than mine. I was throttled out at 60 MPH while he still had 1/2" of throttle left, needless to say he would leave me in the dust while cruising, he would do it just to tick me off that dirty *#@!()?$ Angry
