Thanks Davea.

That's a great price.  I don't think I'll be able to get the price you did. Looking around $5,000 out the door including registration, title and tax.

A California dealer is willing to sell a new S40 for $4399 out the door, minuse the sales tax, title and registration which I would do in Arizona.  Tax is 8%. but the state charges only  $77.00 for title and registration. I don't know how the dealers can justify the $350 fee that they charge. Maybe I'm missing something.   If I get the bike in California there will also be an additional smog test fee of about $29 when I register it here.

Still hoping to buy the bike here in Phoenix.

How do you like your bike. What are the best features.  What are the worst?

Did you do your own 600 mile service? Talked to a Suzuki Service rep and he told me that basically just do needed adjustments, lube various parts of the bike, and change the oil. No valve adjustments (which surprised me)  They charge $120 plus parts.

Ok, I'm in Northern VA - just outside of DC.  In September I bought 2 2005 S40's - one white and one black.  I paid $4597.54  for each and that was the "real out the door price".  I didn't care what they called purchase price, taxes, set up fee, tags, admin fee or anything else - I made them give me the price for me to ride it "paid for" and "road ready" out the door.  I also put it on my Discover Card and just paid it off the next month - so I floated $9000 for about 30 days plus get a "CashBack" bonus on the charge.  On top of that I got 10% on accessories and for attending a "new rider seminar" (and having just bought 2 bikes) we got a booklet with discount coupons.  We'll get 200% tuition reimbursement each for the MSF course we'll take (again for me) in the Spring, a free road hazard/tire & Battery warranty, plus just saved 15% on labor for our first 600 mile service (about $35 each).  There are a few other coupons we'll also be able to take advantage of.

this has all been very helpful.  to be honest i am still confused over whether or not to drop the little bit extra on a 883 sportster or a new savage for what i think i can get for 4600 out the door in nj.

You might be able to get a pre-2004 Sportster for quite a bit less than they have traditionally sold for.  In 2004, they rubber mounted the engines on the Sportsters and those are far more in demand than previous year models.  If you do go the Sporty route and you are less than 5'10" or so, consider gettting a lowering kit on it.  The seat height is several inches higher than the Savage.

I live in Washington State and have been comparing deals on mostly dual sport bikes (Suzuki DR650, DRZ400S, Honda XR650L, Kawasaki KLR650), so I've learned a few things about dealers. First, remember, this is the off season-you should be able to get the best deal now, and later on in the winter. You must compare as many dealers as there are in your area, or as far as you would consider driving. So far, I have found two dealers that do not charge freight and setup fees, at least during the off season. These fees can vary wildly. As an example-one dealer in my area-RMC- I was told they charg $574.00 in freight and setup on a KLR650.I found another dealer, Lake City Honda/Kawasaki,  that will sell me one for $100.00 off MSRP (manufacturers suggested retail price-i.e. "list") with zero freight and setup fees. That dealer will save me $574.00 over RMCs price. Thats big bucks there friends. Paulsons Suzuki in Olympia sells all motorcycles with no freight and setup fees in the off season only. That policy would save me about $340.00 over another dealer that does charge those fees. The other thing is, they are ready to come out with the 2005 models, so you should be able to save a bit more on a leftover 2004 or older. Some dealers may have new, leftovers from several years ago.I remember a dealer that had a new Suzuki Bandit 600, the older style, for a really good price as it was 3-4 years old sitting on his showroom floor. Grin

   Good luck, Jon Neet

I have to admit this is one of the best message boards out there for a new motorcyclist.  I have decided to go for the S40 and will wait for a real cold day in January to begin my negotiations.  Thanks for all the candor and help from everybody.  Lets keep this thread going.

Yes - I agree with Dave - a very nice message board for new Savage owners and/or bikers.  I was in a different group  . . . and dropped out after only a week.

So . . . I do really appreciate all the suggestions, etc. from everyone on the message board.  Tons of really good info for us newbies.
