What a Difference it Made

Well I finally got out on my '02 after changing over to a Sportster muffler and rejetting from a 145 to a 152.5 main. Oh my what a difference it has made, instead of feeling topped out at 4800 rpm the motor runs up to 5400rpm with ease, came close to entering a corner a bit too hot Embarrassed. Instead of going for third at 35 mph I was able to run second out to 45 mph. Big difference in performance and sound and was well worth the time. As a bonus the exhaust pipe is turning back to yellow from the blue color caused by running too lean.  Grin. The beastie does 60mph in third gear, wonder what the top end is now?? A handle bar change is next on the list, then waiting for a weekend when the weather is a bit warmer. Ride Safe, Ed L.

On a 5spd you should be able to hit 55mph in 2nd and 75mph in 3rd.

When I'm out riding I try not to max out the rpm's (6500) for each gear, in fact I don't think maxing out the rpms on any engine on a regular basis is good for it. Instead I try to keep the motor's rpms where the performance feels optimized. My last post was just a comment on how the power range of the bike has changed with the simple modifications which I have made. Even if your riding style is different I am sure that you would be happy with the improvement brought on by the mods. We all know that the Savage is a bit underpowered and any way to squeeze more horsepower out of it is appreciated. What performance improvements have you done to your ride and how do you like them????

Hey Clive, I'm impressed, let me know how the new carb works out. Seems that there is only so much that  can be done with the BS40. Stock my '02 wouldn't haul my butt over 83 mph, there was no way the bike would reach 95mph unless I did a Evel Kenevel over a cliff. Grin Maybe with the mods I'll be able to get close to it which is good enough for now. Ride Safe

Grin  20 in 5th?  Are you kidding?  What happened to "slow, look, lean, roll"?  You certainly can't roll on the throttle at that speed in 5th.

If it hadn't been for all the huge bikes around you, you'd have heard your motor chugging and clunking and crying out  :'(

Some of the information about the speed in each gear to shift up also applies to the speed to shift down

As I've said to Greg the FCR41 is awesome, way better than a dynojeted standard carb (keihin cvk40) but as Greg and I have discused the most important mod to a Savage is to sort out the horrible exhaust port, then go for a bigger diameter exhaust and then the carb.

i was so frazzled by the time we got to that particular turn i had no freaking clue what gear i was in. did slow with the clutch in and went to roll the throttle on after the turn and it seemed to do fine. but surrounded by a million harleys i couldn't hear a thing. so then at 35 i went to shift, but the shift wouldn't go up. and my first thought was "WTF? no not now!" i thought maybe i was stuck in second but that had never happened before.
and i kept on throttling and was able to keep up and tried to shift up again, but it was a no go. that is when it hit me, that i had been too distracted by the riders around me before the turn to shift down at all.
it didn't seem to harm my poor bike.
i have NEVER been so glad when a ride was over as i was then.
even the supercold nightride home from work sans windshield paled in comparison.

Too bad.  Sounds like a really disorganized group of riders to me.  Riding too close.  You should have dropped to the back, maybe.  If you'll notice the riders in Perry's toy run, they appear more spread out

....and slowing with the clutch in is never a good idea unless you plan to stop.  What if you had stalled going around the turn?  You'd have gone down.

Your next toy run (if you do) will probably be much better.

What's involved with changing over to a Sportster muffler?  My brother has one in his garage he can't get rid of!  Is it louder?  Does it flow more?
