I emailed the registry about that and they said " Thank you for contacting the Registry's website with your question. On July 18, 2003 the registrar of motor vehicles issued a decision on mounting license plates in a vertical rather than horizontal position. The registrar feels that mounting a license plate vertically would render the plate illegible and in violation of Massachusetts General Law Chapter 90 Section 6." I spoke to the guys at www.bostonbiker.com and they said " I just spoke with Bob Stewart, owner of Stewy's Customs in Wakefield. He said that last Spring, the Registry guy that is in charge of motorcycle inspections told him that vertically mounted plates weren't allowed. He said that the State Police were going to be enforcing it (along with undersized mirrors). Bob said that he didn't get anything in writing telling him that it is now part of the inspection requirements but thinks that it will eventually come. Bob also said that he heard that Revere Beach was an enforcement area for plates, mirrors, pipes, and helmets. I think there are more and more places that are going to crack down on loud pipes. Bob talked to a few friends of his that are State Police and they said that they didn't care about the plates as long as they were readable when pulled over. I told Bob that I thought they'd want the plates to be readable when riding behind the bike. Bob said that all the cops he talked to said that they'd pull you over if they couldn't see or read your plate anyway but that once you were pulled over as long as the plate was current and belonged to that bike they wouldn't do anything about how it was mounted. I think this is a matter of intrepretation on each cop's view. Anyway, that is what I have so far. I'll try to call the Registry and see if I can't do a phone interview for the website." The Boston Biker site may help you with other questions about the wonderful state of MA and the great way they treat bikers Hope this helps 8)
