Passing the Arizona Emission Inspection
02/09/05 at 17:02:18
Greetings All,
I have a 96 Savage. Passed Emissions great last year but this year failed with 8.62% CO (pass is below 5.00%), Hydrocarbons were well within range. I have it running at a slightly higher idle than normal and was wondering if this could cause it to fail the CO test?
Would changing the air filter to a High Flow filter like a KN lean it out a little and reduce CO emissions?
The bike runs great so I am very reluctant to adjust the mixture settings on the carb (except the idle screw).
It's up for an oil change too, so would this help out any?
I am open to all and any suggestions.
Thanks

Left you an answer on Bert's forum, In thinking about it more, oil change might just do it. max

I know that with automobiles you want to take your smog check with the engine
Hot
. When you passed, was it after an >1/2 hour run? Did you fail with a cooler engine?

Thanks everyone. Yes the engine was hot was I did the test.
Slavy, where are you located in Phoenix? Like to run it through your EGA, there is a chance the testing station may have messed up.

Makes me wonder how our Savages are gonna do here in Oregon...I think they test here too. They didn't in NC.
Thank goodness I still have a stock exhaust if I have to do switcheroo....

If the bike is running good, it will pass the emissions. If it fails- there is something wrong with the adjustments and You will like it better when fixed. The only thing You might have to do if You have all the changes is You might have to tinker a little with the mixture screw just for the test. Once You get Your test done, You just put everything the way You like it.

Mine might be a little on the rich side, since I installed the 157.5 main jet and removed the Raask baffle. That's my only concern.
I didn't like the sound of the Raask baffle because after the packing burned out of it, it made a swoosh sort of sound....the extra baffle was a "prototype" (according to Raask) when I bought it.
Bike work later today 8)

This is the thing that is going to bite you tinkerers. Air cooled bikes are having an increasingly difficult time meeting emissions hence the move to liquid cooling. Suzuki has to run it lean to meet emissions and when you adjust the idle screw and pull out the white spacer you are going to fail. This will become significant in the future.
If you want to avoid this buy an older bike, vehicles must meet the emission for the year they were built, much easier in the 80's.

Yes, but the main jet shouldn't effect the idle and the only test , that I know of is at idle PRMs.

True. Not like they do a dyno run.
I might be stressing over nothing anyway. I read on the DMV web site (because work hasn't allowed time off to check this yet), that emissions testing isn't done on motorcycles in this state....
Anyone in this forum from Oregon?

I mentioned the results, in my long gone topic of the Pacific Northwest.....Oregon doesn't do emissions testing on bikes. They are considered too insignificant in that regard, and the amount of fuel economy is considered on the plus side. So I don't have to worry with it.
No registrations yet, but I do have my Oregon license with a motorcycle endorsement now. I only had to take the written tests.
