Another oil leak - not cap/plug
03/13/05 at 07:50:59
I did the rubber cap/plug fix, and now that leak is gone. But I've found another:
If I pull this nut to put a little gasket paper washer on, will I have a loose bolt that requires a cover/head pull to re-tighten?
I don't remember seeing the top part of this bolt/stud from the top of the head when I yanked the cover to seal the plug/cap.
Any of yall remember what the other end of this bolt/stud is?

It's one of the head studs. I would guess a possible blown gasket. You can try retorqueing the studs and see what happens or since you will have it all apart, just tear it all down and replace the gasket.
P.S. there is another one on the intake side also.

It goes in the exhaust manufold. I have a head out and I can see the end of the stud in the left part of the exhaust port. You will see it too if You pull the header pipe off and shine with a flash light.

I've seen this problem too.
The studs are shown with the white arrows.
The compression seal for the cylinder is shown with the red one.
Sources of oil are shown in blue from the pressure passage and the cam chain tunnel.
And my theory is that oil can travel around the center of the gasket (which you see is wet) without there being a loss of compression....there are sort of compression seals on both the inside and outside edges of the head gasket.
I wouldn't use a paper gasket under the nut because you must torque it. Maybe a copper one like under the other head nuts would work if the stud is long enough.

Thanks for the wisdom, I'll make a little copper washer & give it a try.
Greg, where'd you get that great pic of the rusty skeleton & bike? That's GREAT.

snip
Based on Greg's picture I would think that just retorqueing the head should take care of the leak. Like he said looks possible to have a leak with out loss of compression.

I hope it has nothing to do with a certain pier in Hawaii.

Good one, Git
Red Wine....I found this "statue" along route 26 just to the west of Mt. Hood (east of Portland). I wish that I could take the credit for more than just stopping to take a picture.
I kinda figured that others here might like it too.

Oh... I see, so it's not the real Sluggo from the bottom of Hawaii....
just for one second, I thought someone had stolen the real Sluggo's identity, after digging him out of the warm Hawaiian waters
And, yes we did like that steel moron....
Thanks again, Greg... take care
