4/05/05 Biker build-off...

Watch it, either tonight or on re-run Friday/Saturday on Discovery. Indian Larry's Memorial. If you didn't like him, that's fine, watch something else. If you don't get the Discovery Channel, I'm sorry.

Not everyone liked his bikes, his riding style, or his "look". BUT, if nothing else, the show will be a perfect example of how the riding community should come together in a time of need.

I'm going to watch it, even though I know it will severely bother me. Indian Larry is/was/remains the reason I do what I do with bikes, and even with the bike sites. He went out of his way to help fellow riders in need, I try to do the same.

Indian Larry 4/1949-8/2004 RIP my brother.

Thnaks for the head's-up there WD ... besides building some of the nicest Bikes of the Custom world, Indian Larry was a true gentleman ... I envy those who were fortunate enough to have known him ...

You're welcome. I thought he deserved whatever kind of send off those of us who appreciated him could give "voice" to.

I believe that Jules and I saw that one while down at a local watering hole on Saturday.  He's the guy that had a frame made out of welded chain, right?

Yes.  He's also the guy who stood on the seat of a moving bike without a helmet.  That's what I remember about him most.  Dying stupidly.  Embarrassed

people who think outside the box often find such restrictions irrelevant.
he seemed like a live for today kind of guy from the show last night.

as i haven't much followed the stars of chopperdom i didn't really know him as more than just a name. now i wish i had known more about him earlier.

yes it's a loss, but he was doing what he loved in the manner he chose.

Yep.   But doing that wasn't thinking at all.   And now he's worm food.

I think he was an interesting character who made cooler bikes than most anyone else in those biker shows.  But there's thousands of guys in their own garages who make cooler bikes than anyone on TV.

Bikedom loss? Yes.

Stupid death? Yeppers.  He was doing a SQUID stunt.

I guess I just don't have much sympathy for people who Darwinize themselves.

Sad

Git, I fully agree that stunt riding without a helmet is a Darwin Award waiting to happen. I also agree that thousands of garage built bikes are equal to or better qulaity than the standard TV celebrity scoots, most of which are bolt-on billet barges in disguise.

Indian Larry's build style was the impetus for many garage builders to start. Tight rake, big motor, no excess junk. Clean, simple, personalized chariots that reflect the builder's tastes instead of the "part du jour" lemming mentality.  Take a deep look at what you have done to your bike...a bike that the mainstream ignores. From where I sit, there is a bit of him in each one of us who owns a Savage/S40. Did I agree with his stunt riding, no. Did I envy him the ability to do the stunts, yes. Did I want to go through all the difficulties he (and to some extent I) faced, no. Did I want to develop the level of talent he had? Yes, beyond any shadow of a doubt.

I honestly feel he knew his time was coming. On the I.L. -vs- Mondo build, he presented Mondo with a Panhead piston, engraved with the trademarked question mark symbol, sporting a pair of Angel wings... Did he off himself? Don't know, I doubt it, but I don't know.  Either way, I judge him by his bikes, by what he tried to do for the biking community, and for the way his passing brings the true chopper scene together.

For me, the issue is ready for closure. I'll just keep trying to build and ride the best quality bikes I can. For me. All for now, I've got a seat to finish hand stitching...
