Cross your fingers...
04/15/05 at 01:38:23

I go to the "quack shack" (doctor's office) this afternoon. Should find out what the next step is in this ongoing nightmare with my lower back. Vocational rehabilitation hasn't started, physical therapy isn't doing much, if any, good.

My stepson and his girlfriend intend to head for northern California the end of the month, and buy crotch rockets once they've gotten settled in. Looks like I'm getting my Savage back by default. It is not a Cal spec bike, he refuses to retrofit the pollution control stuff, and has no way to get it down there (he has no bike license and his car has no towing provisions). I just finished the seat restitch and retension, and have started the repaint...hope I can go more than a couple miles at a time on it.

My doctor rides (a BMW touring rig, but, it is still a bike) and I'm getting my bike back. Coincedence? I hope not, our car (deceased) and truck (one of 3, dying rapidly) are both on the collector market. If they go, I'm back to two wheels 100% of the time. I was cleared to ride starting in early December, and forgot... Roll Eyes

With gas in the Seattle area starting to top $3.25 a gallon, time to ditch the collector cars and break out the bikes.

As a "lower back" sufferer myself, I'm keepin' my fingers crossed for ya WD ... hope Dr. McCoy gives ya a clean bill.
Geez $3.25USD/gal? Wow, that's about what we're payin' at $1.01CAD/litre given the currency & capacity conversions ... and the taxation level on gasoline is much higher here than Washinton I'm sure ...

I'm an hour south of the city proper. It's still about $2.40 USD average in my area. But, when seattle talks, the crooks in office take note. So I expect gas to top $3 a gallon where I live soon... still better than highway diesel around here, $2.70 a gallon and rising daily.

And, I read in yesterdays paper that in 2009, Washington is going to California emissions. If they try to make me refit the bike, I'm moving. I've left this state before, never expected to come back, and I'll do it again. If I have to put up with the emissions junk, I ought as well move to Cali, at least it's warm there...it's typical late November weather here right now. Early February it was in the 60s and 70s.  :'( Ruined the paint on the bike, the stuff sprayed in February was perfect, the stuff sprayed this month, from the same can, is a different color.

If the Savage doesn't work for me anymore ergonomically, I'll just have to get a scoot that will. Gas is too high to justify having my fullsized trucks anymore.

I switched to reserve on the way into work this morning.  Unless the guy changes the price before 4pm I'll get getting Mobil regular at $2.559 -- about the lowest price around.

For your new scooter have you considered a "dual purpose" bike?  I came from dirt to street and picked the Savage mainly because it is thin between the legs and light.  But it is a bit stiff in the suspension department.  I don't know what the suspension travel of the Savage is, but a KLR650 has 9.1 inches of travel front and rear.  The KLR's 35" seat height is a stopper for me with my 30" inseam.

The Bergman 650 looks to be cushy on the tushy if you really get desperate.

You ARE out of the loop....

It isn't that just Washington is going to CA emissions.  ALL of the US is going to CA emissions standards by 2006.  This only concerns NEW motorcycles for sale in the US, and there is no grandfathering, retrofit or anything.  So no need to move.

All of this started a few years ago and is the result of new EPA guidelines that were approved early this year.  If you go to the AMA website you can find all the info you want.  And it gets better....there is another set of standards that not only go into effect for CA, but will become mandatory in the other 49 states in either 2008 or 2010.

It all started with an EPA proposal to apply emissions standards to small gasoline engines, and somewhere they managed to add motorcycles since popularity has increased so much...yep, government at its best.  Didn't you all see it on the nightly news?  No?  Surprise, surprise, surprise!!!  There was little or no publicity.

I wrote the EPA and argued back and forth with some stuffed shirt in several emails.  I also wrote a few congressmen back in 2003, but never heard anything back.  The AMA was very involved and did have a good influence on the outcome.

To answer the questons: Yes, I'm out of the news loop. No, I don't read anything by the AMA. Permission to ride has been yanked. The kids are moving to Oak Grove, where ever that is, somewhere around Sacramento. Stepson is still buying the new paint and new battery for the chop, so he'll have something to ride up here when he comes to visit.

Goodnight, I'm going to bed. Started intramuscular lidocaine injections this afternoon. I feel like death warmed over.

Well, now you know some of the answers, and if you chose to be informed about some things, you do have to read from time to time...The MRF was also involved in the process.

But if you really want to know what it is all about....go directly to the horse's mouth.  This is what happened on Jan 15, 2004 and very few people ever heard anything about it.

WD,

I'm very sorry to read about that, and that your back keeps giving you pain and trouble...  Sad

I do hope that whatever your doc says or does may lead to you riding again, even if for short trips...

Take care,

RW
