savage questions
04/17/05 at 10:20:35

i finally got to do some real riding today.

i have some questions...

i know the savage can hit 80 maybe 90 mph.  but when i accelerate up to 60 it feels like its having a tough time goin up to 70 and up.  I'm also afraid to rev it up much cuz around 60 i hear alot of buzzing .

Has anyone heard this?

also....to run a straight pipe, do i need to go up a jet on the pilot jet?  I currently have the stock 86 set up.  155 main jet and i' m not sure the pilot jet.

i also plan on putting in pod filters...what size diameter will fit? also how did people with pod filters put them on(directly on the carb or the air tube)

thanks

Mine is a 2000, stock as far as I know.   Going down the Harbor Freeway it runs up to 75 with gusto and seems quite willing past that -- 'cept I'm backing off as it's uncomfortable without wind protection.

Good question for an '87.  That depends on the sound of the exhaust when you do that.  You can get a good idea if the jetting needs work by the way the engine sounds after you make the change.

That depends on what you want to do....I have the K&N RC-1250 tapered cone pod on mine with no airbox....go to the website and look for comparable size filters.  They have an online catalog.

Before my '87 ended up stored, I only got her to 80mph going downhill, never went over 75. Don't know if that helps or not.

I've found two sources of buzzing on mine but neither one was near the exhaust.  One was the speedo.  A check of the tension on the springs behind it and a little spray silicone between the rubber gasket and the tank fixed that.  The second was a loose screw in the headlight housing.  A screwdriver and a bit of Loctite fixed that.

The very first thing- Your bike is 1987. They come stock with 45 pilot and 155 main jet. If You are running straight pipe YOU MUST go up in the main jet. I'd try 162.5. Somebody had 165 main and claimed it was running very good.

I get to 80 pretty quick, but it's slow accelerating after that.  92 is the fastest I've seen, 88 with my wife on the p-seat riding with me.

Rattles?  Mine had a ton of them, still has a few.

I made little leather pieces to go between the speedo & tank to fix that rattle.

I brute-forced the exhaust with an automotive clamp to stop that one (ugly covered by the chrome cover).

Noticed the other day my right mirror is rattling from inside the mirror, have not fixed it yet.

Then I noticed a poser griping about rattles on his HD, and I remembered...

I have an old Ford, old Chevy, old Buick, and old Suzuki GS1000 that make all kinds of racket.  Louder than a sack full of cats.

My YZF600 buzzes like a beehive.

I quit worrying about the rattles.
