Seat woes...

Okay, after riding my '01 for the last three days for a total of almost 300 miles I have come to the stunning realization that the stock Savage seat absolutely SUCKS.

I am going to get the seat redone over winter, maybe by Sargent, but I need a short-term solution for now. Has anyone here used any of the seat pad products that are available? How about the Airhawk pad?

I have an Airhawk that I've been using about two weeks now. I highly recommend it! It's cheaper than a seat redo and it is extremely comfortable.

I like the fact that it is adjustable and you can add or subtract air as you need it for the ride. I've got mine pretty close to perfect now after several different adjustments.

It doesn't take much air to make it ride great and it adds very little to the overall set height (which is important when you are only 5'2").

At first, I thought it was a little pricey, but after riding for a few weeks on it now, I am convinced that it was money well spent.

I used the straps on the pad and some snowshoe lacing to strap it to my seat so it is a semipermanent fixture. The non-skid bottom on the pad makes it sit real still on your stock seat, if you choose not to tie it down.

As you can tell, I'm pretty excited about my Airhawk. I bought the Small Cruiser size for my Savage and it fits perfectly.

For normal everyday riding, I use the Sheepy Hollow cruiser seat pad. It fits the stock Savage seat very well, is cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. For longer rides, I use the GEL-TEC Cruzer Motorcycle Cushion. This is from folks who make therapeutic medical pads for wheelchairs, hospital beds, etc. It is one seriously comfortable cushion.

A real quick fix that works well is head to the hardware store and pick 2 #7 rubber stoppers these are a bit over an inch thick , 2 m6x50mm hex head 12.9 bolts, and six 1/2"x1/2" 1/4 inch thick rubber stick on "feet" - drill a hole through the rubber stoppers big enough to fit the bolts through - pull the seat off and the front seat brace as is shown in the tech post - the rubber feet go on the frame flat spot - clean it first w/ 409 the seem to stick real well, and rubber stoppers go under the brace between it and the tank - and in with the longer bolts - works great - gets your tail on the wider part of the seat and the rubber stoppers take out a lot of the vibs the thumper makes. I'm going to order a gel tec I think along with better shocks - but for this works great on 80+ mile a day comute

You think that the seat is bad? I just did a 2 hour ride today and the whole time, I was riding with my a*s on the b*tch pad. This bike is just too small. I'm thinking I need to move the seat back but I dont want to f*ck with it untill I get the forward controls in. Hopefully the forward controlls will help a lot and then I can maybe go with a springer seat.

the only way that your seat will be comfortable is by riding many miles in it and growing accoustomed to it. look at lance armstrongs bike. i'm sure when he started riding it hurt like heck.

someone who plays the bass will tell you their fingers hurt until the built up callouses.

way to much money is wasted on trying to find a comfortable seat. just ride the darn thing till your butt hurts then refuel. keep doing this and soon you can do hundreds of miles in a day with no ill effects.

Yeah, well, I have a different philosophy...

I ride for pleasure and frankly, that ain't pleasurable. The bass is a little different...so is riding something professionally. I come home from work, ride a little, sometimes I ride to work, on the weekends I ride. A sore butt isn't something I care to work through. I don't need those callouses on my a$$ for anything.

I bought an AirHawk and I'm proud... Grin
