It's a safety thing for night riding. During the day, looking through the shield isn't really a problem. BUT, at night oncoming headlights tend to "halo" around sand pitting and scratches. On the few bikes I've had with windshields (3 out of 75), I ended up cutting them down. Now I use a police helmet with flip down "riot" shield faceplate. If the oncoming lights are excessive, I'll open the shield and slow down.
Windshields can be a blessing AND a curse at the same time. If you keep it clean and as scratch free as possible, and like the reduced buffeting, more power to you. If you are lazy or a cheapskate and won't clean/replace the shield as needed, you are better off without one. -WD
