Jet question

Read many times about re-jetting etc, but how do I know what size jet I have in the first place? as my 96 has had 2 previous owners.

No way to know with out draining and pulling the 4 srcrews (That i suggest you replace with allen head stainless) - the '02 was stock - had a 145 - the '95 had 147.5 when I got it - and pull the main jet - take it easy on the jet re-install when you start the treads - push to hard and the tube can unseat and bind - then you may need to pull the slide to get back in proper

That's the gist.  You just drain and pull the bottom of the carb and the jet is in the center.  Replacing the screws with stainless allen heads is definitely a good idea.  It'll make accessing it in the future a snap.  I did it for the top side too.  A flathead screwdriver will remove the jet and then you read the size stamped into the brass.  I dunno about you but I had to use reading glasses.

My '98 was stock with a 145 also.

While we are on this topic................

How do you then decided what size jet to replace it with?  I bought the Krome Werks muffler from Lancer and would like to cover all the bases before I round up a wrench tutor.

I've seen some rule of thumb before that said a higher flow air filter was +1 size , a higher flow exhaust was +1 or +2 jet sizes - so call that about 3 (if you open the air intake a little). Stock these carbs have a 145 main - but they are lean as he77 and from eyeballing the stock '02 it's reasonable with a 150 jet and stock pipe - so if you start there 150 + ( 3 *2.5 )  - I'd say 157.5 or a 155 if you leave the filter/air box alone, would be a good start - then you need check the spark plug - are you going to chop the white spacer down to half and richen the idle mixture as well?

I had some trouble locating the right allen bolts in a hardware store.  Am I going to find these at the bike shop or does anyone have a better suggestion?  I have no choice but to replace them since I skimped on an impact driver and ended up drilling out the top four.  I decided after that the $35 dollars would be well spent for any future problems.

I find Ace Hardware has a good selection of metric bolts where I am.  Varied assortments.. including the more expensive chrome.  I tend to go with stainless.

Prior to removing the stock carb on my Savage in the search for more performance, I found that by going 1 or 2 sizes larger on the main jet and one size larger on the pilot jet, that this would take care of most bikes with a stock engine and K&N style filter and aftermarket muffler.

It would be awsome if someone placed something on "how to replace the Jet" in the tech section.  There's a lot of us that would like to know how to do this..  I think.  Smiley
