Blue Pipe Problem 1998 Savage

Hello guys,

I am new to this forum but I'm not new to forums.  Here is the issue.  I just purchsed a used 1998 Suzuki Savage 650 from a friend of mine.  The bike is in absoluetly mint condition and has 1,300 miles on it.  So she is still a baby.

I rode her home and then rode around the block about 15 times or so.  So I have but about 40 minutes of riding tops on it.  The first 8-12" of pipe that come out of the engine are blue.  I believe it has essentially cooked the crome right off the pipe because the pipe is some kind of blueish black color.  A friend of mine who knows more about engines than I do claims that this isn't supposed to be happening.  He claims it is a problem with the advance or which he believes is part of the ignition module.

Can you guys offer me any advice?

The other information that I can offer is that I just changed the battery because it wasn't holding a charge.  The guy at the shop recommended changing to a chemical battery as opposed to a water type battery.  Could this have anything to do with it?

Any help that you guys can offer would appreciated because I am singing the blues right now because I want to ride.

Thanks

Tom

The first advice, since you are familiar with forums, is to read the "Read Me" post at the top of this forum that states you should not post questions here.  Please post them in Rubber Side Down as instructed.  This forum is for Technical Documents - not discussion.  Though you are certainly not the only person ignoring this, it's still incorrect.  Posting discussion in RSD not only minimizes the pollution on this forum, it increases the chances you'll get an answer.

My second advice is to do a search on this site because pipe bluing has been discussed ad nauseum and the causes, preventions and potential remedies already exist in several other threads.

Thanks.  Not trying to be an @ss but it's really gotten out of hand.

Hi Tom. The reason your pipes turn blue is because the carburetion is jetted too lean. It sounds like maybe the previous owner added an aftermarket exhaust and didn't rejet. This happens all too often. Stock bikes will blue the exhaust too but it takes awhile.

Do a search for jetting and white spacer and you should get some good info.
