The fuel line on the Savage/S40 is not 5/16" it is 7MM.
Kabota Tractor Stores stock the 7mm Fuel Line.

Suzuki Part Number For Timing Cover
Suzuki Part# 09259-36008
This is the cover with an Allen Socket rather than the straight slot.

I recently decided to do my speedometer like MM Ranch has his.
The tachometer cable came from a mid eighties model Suzuki GT750 will connect to the S40 and although it is 2 or 3" longer than necessary it works as it should. The part number has changed in recent years and is not shown on Ron Ayers website. It shown on Bike Bandit. The cable I ordered today is Part # 34940-18131 this replaces the old part # 467522.
Even though it is a tachometer cable it apparently functions fine as a Savage/S40 speedometer cable.
I was able to order the part from Ron Ayers over the telephone as the software they use to order from Suzuki shows the new part number.
I will try to remember to post the results after I install it.

~~~ UPDATE ~~~
The late model (2000) Suzuki VS1400GLP speedo should work, the S40 and VS1400 share the SAME drive on the speedo (Suzuki part # 34131-19B00), Ceteris paribus (all things being equal) we may have an alternative to the tank mount.
*note - our
stock
speedo will fit inside the VS1400 housing, but the mounting studs are offset and the trim rings and weather seal are slightly different
known VS1400 modifications:
electrical (i.e. splicing in the IDIOT lights)
triple-tree mounting (2 bolts underneath, I am still working on this)
there's a bonus to using the whole VS1400 unit: resettable TRIP METER
