I've participated in many forums on a lot of topics besides bikes, and I hear the guy's point.  Sure we need to take a deep breath when a newbie asks an old question (I'm as green as they come to this "community"), but what the hell, how long does it take to answer it?  There was another post about how "patient" an experienced rider would be with a newbie rider...can't we do the same on forums?  This seems like a great site for people devoted to what is frankly a marginal ride, and I like it and hope that it can stay pretty mellow.  Hell, I was ready to junk my 2000 for an HD Wide Glide, but I'm pretty stoked by all the suggestions that I've found here.  HD will have to wait a few more  years for my $$.  Live and let live and let's ride.

"If you can't say something nice... don't say nothing at all."
--- Thumper.

It takes less effort to ignore than it does to tell someone that they could have searched for the answer.  If you don't want to answer someone then don't.  Someone else will.

ya i agree with good ole thumper Cheesy . Although i dont think the comment was offensive or reason for him to stop posting i think if someone is going to make a comment that might make someone feel dumb why not send a private message. It doesn't really matter though i just think the kid should have been more thick skinned and should continue posting. but o well

I just don't see the purpose of taking off the shocks and replacing them with metal bars, is it suppose to give it the look of a hardtail? I think hardtails are cool, but I like them because of the clean look of the frame, just putting on some metal bars doesn't seem to make that much of a difference to me.

yeah I agree with paladin too.  I have searched this site on many of my problems and although I didnt feel WD's comment offensive, there is no such thing as a dumb question.  If a topic has been covered a hundred times dont reply.  Like an old wise man once said if I wanted to talk to a butthole I would have farted Tongue

here's my follow up. if you read my original post, you will see that i did answer the question. i did provide a link to the discussion that had taken place just a few days before. i don't feel there are dumb questions, yet in this case if he had taken just a little time to look around he would see the subject was just discussed, and could have added his post to that.  my point was then and is now, if new people "read"  not just search, they will find a wealth of information from people who are no longer here, and they get to "know" the people at the party.  is that so bad? it may take a little time yet worth the effort.

" If a topic has been covered a hundred times dont reply. "  your quote proved my point, the poster then wouldn't recieve the benifit of "all" the knowledge on the subject. or possibly get the one piece of info he needs to solve the problem.  thats not good either. so we answer over and over, and remind people that there is more information available, that is if they take the time to do a little homework.   really it's not like i said "go look for yourself" which would have been meant to make him feel like a chump, that was not my intention.

My bad.  Reading back you did answer by pointing out that the answer was recently available.  And it's a two-way street, "if you can't say something nice" applies to "I'm sorry that we are not all perfect like you."  Which leads to other quotes such "I'd like to help you out, which way did you come in?"

As to the purpose of struts, it is to immobilize the rear suspension.  I think that is to allow the use of a larger tire without it rubbing when the rear end bottoms out.

I know that while rigid frames are a chopper standard, people make big money hiding suspension in what appears to be a rigid.  Amen came out with their Saviour Frame several decades ago and are still making them.

I would prefer that someone answer the question rather than ignoring the post. Putting in references to previous threads makes the answer more complete.

Another suggestion that I have would be to remember that even in this day and age not everyone has lots of experience on-line and with forums and may not know how they work (or that this one works a little different than others  Cheesy ) A little explanation and direction (such as the suggestion to read through the site) will also make the answer better imho.

Maybe reading posts several times before responding would also be a good idea. I know when I first read sluggo's reply I thought it was a little harsh, but after reading it again, I noticed (ignoring the first comment about cropping Roll Eyes ) that he a) answered the question, b) gave a reference to the previous thread c) made the suggestion to do a little more work before posting questions d) sort of apologized for the suggestion.
