I was giving my '01 a once-over when I decided to lube the clutch lever and cable.  For some reason, I decided I'd take off the clutch lever switch and blast it with some contact cleaner.  The darned screw holding the clutch lever switch on must have been bathed in red Loc-Tite because I, in order:

1)  Stripped the phillips head of the screw.
2)  While trying to remove the screw, broke the head off.
3)  While trying to drill the screw out, broke off a drill bit in the screw.
4)  Threw up hands in disgust and ordered a new clutch lever assembly - over thirty bucks!

LESSON:  If you have a vague desire the remove the clutch lever switch and find the screw difficult to turn, quit while you're ahead and go fix something else.

Don't be like poor me!

Here's a trick for those cheap Phillips screws on the Savage.  Use a Phillips bit in a ratchet or T-handle so you can press down hard into the screw head.  I've found that I can't press down hard enough with a regular screwdriver to keep it from camming out, but using a T-handle makes a big difference.

I also use a little anti-seize on any fastener that's steel threading into aluminum, or anything that might get wet and rust in place.

I've had trouble finding stainless Allen screws around here, but plain Allens are also a good upgrade.  And be sure to use the anti-seize on any of them.

In my neck o' the woods, Ace Hardware has been the best source.   They've been pretty good about ordering any they don't have in stock too.  They even have some really high-dollar chrome ones if you want SAE instead of metric.  I'm using the stainless.

I got mine out, but couldn't get one out on the brake side!

My European bike doesn't have a clutch switch - or, for that matter, a sidestand switch (although the hanging wire might just be the leftover from a sidestand switch that was chucked away)
Why can't you simply short it and get it over with?
Either one's mature enough to know that the bike is to be left in neutral when parked (and I always check it's in neutral before I start it) or one doesn't even deserve to be riding one !
As the flight attendant once said 'if you don't know how to buckle up a safety belt then you shouldn't be on this plane unattended !' 8)
