Bike wont start! ARGH! Please HELP
08/13/05 at 10:42:51
Man I just got my licence and i'm rip roaring to go, so I get it started, it goes fine and i'm just warming it up with the throttle, and then I let off the throttle to pick up something and it dies. So I try to start it again with no luck...I keep trying until I run the battery down, I charge it up and then try more, no go, even get someone to hold the choke out while I try to start it, no go.
Then I think to myself, maybe its the gas. Come to look I was low on gas so I go out and get some, fill it up (this is the next day by now) and it still is a no go! Just goes wricka-wricka-wricka-wricka...never starts up. I don't know what to do, it was working fine before.
let me know what ya'll think...

Hey.
Yah the full shutoff valve is in the PRI position, but I was just looking in my manual and it says "Is the fuel shutoff valve in the ON position..." Maybe I need to try that.
Also, I'm not sure about the sprk plug, how do I access it? Also, hw do i know if the decompression cable is properly adjusted
thanks

if your not sure about the spark plug,i would change it just to be sure. you will have to take the tank off,and the chrome cover on the left side of the head of the engine (left side when sitting on it). When taking the tank off youll have to remove the seat and the two bolts at the bottom of the tank, then remove the fuel line, vacum line from the petc-ock.Then slide the tank backwards and liftup, when it comes loose disconnect the wire connector and unscrew the speedometer cable. then remove that chrome cover then the plug.
The decompression cable nut shold be about right in the middle. But when u can see it try to start the bike just to see if it moves.
GOOD LUCK

I had something similar with my 2000 after it had been sitting for a long time. Are you sure that your battery is fresh and charged? I swapped in a new battery and it fired right up.

yah battery is running fine, all charged up, I'm thinking it is the sprk plug...I wish it wasnt such a hassle to cheack it, on many bikes its not as complicated, I mean removing the seat and tank and all...a little intense but i'll deal with it, hopefully be fixing it tommorow

Toss the little chrome piece in the trash and no more fighting to change the plug. Last time I changed mine, the NEW reinforced fuel line split.

The reason I asked about PRI (prime) is you said it was low on fuel - the pri will bypass the vac diaphram and fill the carb bowl - could be the plug I guess but seems unlikely to instantly fail when you let it idle - could washed out what with somebody holding the choke out - the choke should stay out by itself
what year is the bike?

i've found pri to be a bad thing everytime for me. If your bike has been sitting in pri for a while i bet your spark plug is soaked leave your bike in On and change your plug its really not that bad to change the plug. if you have two people its a million times easier. The seat takes two screws to remove. then the tank is held in by two bolts be carefull with fuel lines when removing. but anyway if you have a second person they can hold on the side using part of the bike frame to hold it while you change the plug i actually managed to do it by myself ussing my knee to hold the tank in place against the frame and changed out the plug. then later i had to do the carb and my b-in-law held the tank while i adjusted the needle.

Oh I certainly agree the PRI can be bad - only use it if you know the carb is empty of gas - say ran it out or had it off to change the jet, or the vac petc0ck is not functioning correctly - sounds like the thought here was he ran it out.

yea i agree with you. but in one of his posts he said yah it was in prime which leads me to believe he had it there the whole time even after add gas and charging the battery which would be bad

I changed the plug a month or two ago (to do normal maintenance) And I'm not sure how I got away with it (small hands maybe??) I didn't really have to take the tank off. I did loosen it and slide it back but never took it off. It took more time to put the clips back on the carb hoses than it did to change the plug or re bolt everything back together.
If I can do it alone, You and your friend helping you (the one that held the choke?) should have no big problems and get it done in under an hour tops.
