Filling gas tank

I have a rookie question - when you fill the gas tank, should the bike be on the side stand, or standing up straight?  If you fill the bike while on the side stand, then it is too full when you stand the bike up.  So it might leak out unless the filler cap is sealed.  Thanks for your insight into this.

It would be a little difficult to fill you bike up with it standing straight up, unless you alway have two people with you.

And, if you fill it up while on the kick stand you will put less in than you would standing straight up.  The only time I had a bike leak gas out of the gas cap was when I filled the bike up and it was set up to stand straight up on it's kick stand.

A general tip:  Don't fill the tank all the way to the lip, this will cause gas to leak out of the gas cap.

And I've noticed spillage unless I do the following:

Fill up while on the sidestand.
Stand bike straight.
Replace cap.

If I replace the cap while it's still on the sidestand immediately after filling it, occasionally it leaks.

What I do is fill it on the stand upto the bottom of the metal tube or close - and before I put the cap back on - slosh it back and forth a couple of times. The '95 will still leak at times if I hard right leaving the station - may need a new gasket myself.

That's how I do it as well. Unless I want to run in and grab a gatorade.

while gasing up the wing in ohio once, they would not turn pump on untill rider AND passenger both dismounted. mabey just that stations rules, i donno, mabey state regs. after that we both just got off at gas stops, never tested it again. bill aka diesel.

Sounds like we are in effect doing the same thing - bet an air pocket is forming on the left that gets burp'd outa there - either before - no leak or after - leak - the gas cap goes on
