It's a Honda, but I thought I'd ask anyway. +

I have a 1983 Honda CB450. First bike. New rider. Know nothing about bikes. Couldn't repair my way out of a wet paper bag, unless it involved a screwdriver, vice grips or hammer.

The issue is that when I ride a distance, say 50-60 miles...right around that time, my right foot just kills me. The vibration is pretty extreme, and after a while, my foot is in enough pain to pull over for a while, and it is numb so I can't tell if I am on the brake or not. WTH?  Undecided

Thanks for any help you can give me. Any advice?

B

Screwdrivers are good, but avoid using vice grips or your hammer on the Honda - they do more harm than good.

High rpms and keeping your feet planted in one spot is what's hurting you. You could lower the rpms on the highway by substituting a smaller rear sprocket or add highway bars to change the position of your feet. Go with some highway bars...they're cheap and pretty easy to install. They should make all the difference.

Hey man, you're not braking with your right foot all the time are you? That's a common mistake by new riders.  The front brake is you friend, the rear brake is your skid machine.

Does your right foot ever bother you in a car (or cage)?  If not, think about what Gitarzan said.

And vertical twins can vibrate too  Shocked

What speeds?  Steady or stop and go?  Vibrations increase with speed, you might consider backing off 5 mph.  If steady speeds you might condsider highway pegs on a crash bar so you can vary your leg position.

Might consider getting another rider's opinion of whether or not your bike has excessive vibrations -- as in something out of balance.  Are the vibrations in pace with engine speed or road speed?

There may be a way to rubber mount those footpegs. I'd look at how they're mounted & see if there's a way to put a rubber bushing or two there to dampen the vibes. Another tooth on the front sprocket may be another option.  8)

I was gonna say switch out the footpegs for some rubber encased kind.   When I switched out my handlebar grips it made a huge difference in vibration.
Changing the position of ur feet would probably help alot too but highway bars arent cheap, unless its a engine guard foorpeg combo.  I was thinking going this route but I dont think it would solve my "im too cramped for my bike" problem as much as I would want it to.

I do like Savage_Rob's guard tho. It looks awesome and might work for what I need.  How much was that rob?

If You are a new rider You are probably pretty tense and this aggrivates what ever problem there is. Try to change the riding position every 15-20 miles. Try to put Your feet on the rear footpegs for couple of minutes.

I noticed that my feet felt better after I started wearing my new boots to ride.  The old boots were thin soled and flexible; but real comfortable.  The new ones have soles that are thicker and stiffer.  So maybe different shoes would help you?

Nearly on the same subject  Smiley

A conversation between Mr. Honda and God.

Mr. Honda asked God, "Aren't you the inventor of women?"
God Said, "Ah, yes. Indeed I am".
"Well," said Mr. Honda, "Professional to professional, you have some
major design flaws in your design."
1 - There's too much inconsistency in the front-end protrusion.
2 - It chatters constantly at high speeds.
3 - Most of the rear ends are too soft and wobble too much.
4 - The intake is placed way too close to the exhaust.
5 - Plus the monthly down time and aggravation are outrageous, and don't even get me started talking about the maintenance costs.
”Hmmmm, you do raise some good points”, replied God, "Lets have a wee look."
God went to his Celestial super computer, typed in a few things and waited for the results. After a moment God said, "Well, it may be true that my invention seems to be flawed, but according to these numbers, more men are riding my invention than yours."
