a straight pipe has more power at higher revs, because the engine needs to breathe more.a supper trap has a little more midrange power.a nd a straight pipe has more torque, thats why race cars and dragsters have straight pipes, not baffles.

Torque,

Your straight pipe, is it wide open without baffles of any sort?  Without any backpressure, I suspect the low end/and or midrange may be a bit doggy.  Sure it'll be be better at the top end, but the savage is really a low end bike... so if we're looking for 1/4 mile type stuff, the savage outright sucks, IMHO, but for ripping around town...  put a thumbscrew in there to get a little backpressure!

I'm running a 17" (14" body) glasspack/cherry bomb with a thumbscrew, 152.5 main, 47.5 pilot, and KN bolted right to the carb and it screams.  Yes, I still get killed in the 1/4 mile, though...

no baffles, from trial and error ive found it to run best with out them.

all i said was that i got beat buy a 250,i dont really care that i did,and yes the the savage will keep up with any cruiser untill high rpms.i did beat him for 2 seconds,  thats a while when drag racing, about to 50mph,then after that he cruised by me.

the savage is the best around the town bike u can get, it does have a sh!tload of low end torque, theres nothing more fun than peeling out on the bolevard!!! Grin

H#LL YEAH !!!  ...though I prefer the wheelie to the burnout!

Anyway, not tyring to get your goat or diagnose "problems" with your bike...  just uh, I dunno.  Maybe I should just keep my mouth (keyboard) shut and get back to work!  Lips Sealed  ...just yakin'

As quick as those Ninja 250s are, they're probably fairly gutless under 10,000 rpm & need 2 or 3 downshifts to pass anyone. My 650 Nighthawk was fast but I had to ring its neck to get going. The torquey Savage is more satisfying for me to scoot around town on.  8)

There's definitely something wrong with your motor. My Savage NEVER lost a stoplight to stoplight battle. 'Course, I wasn't afraid to constantly bounce it off the red line, in each gear. 90mph in third is possible. Not recommended, but possible. My 99 Kawi Vulcan 800A will do 70mph in second, without touching the rev limiter. Sounds awful doing it, but, is actually okay to do every so often. Limiter is set at 8200 or 8700 rpms.

Since I'm a rookie, I like being able to just jam the throttle open, and have it pull away even if I'm in the wrong gear.  Ran through a tight curve yesterday that went into a sharp uphill.  It was cool to avoid the shift.

On a separate note, does the Savage have a rev limiter?  I don't have a tach yet, so I'm a little afraid to really wring it out.

Pretty much, the fun starts around 7,000 rpm.  But, cruising at 60 mph, you're at 7000 rpm anyhow.

o my god we have a super bike in disguise,90mph in third gear, that equals out to 170mph top speed.
thats weird becuase the listed top speed is 85,which is kind of weird because i can hit 95 no problem, which is d@mn good for a 5000max rpm bike.

but 90 in third is a load of bs if u have a 5 speed.and everybody knows it.thats what there saying anyway yes the bike has good accelleration, thats what its made for,its not made for speed, plain and simple.

no limiter.

I have a baby ninja that I use in the twisties and I've ridden it on the highway plenty. You don't have to downshift on the highway to pass anyone, unless they're doing 85 mph plus. You'd be shocked at the looks on my friends faces as I leave them behind on their 600cc+ crotch rockets in the twisties. The Savage is my commute bike, but the baby ninja is my have fun bike.

Yes,
EX250 es pretty fast for 250 cc bike, but it is still a  POS. I am saying this like a mechanic. They suck to work on, especially to adjust the valves. The frame is weak. They have pretty short life, again because of the valves. If You go to Muzzy exhaust and K&N filters, You can make it move pretty good, but we are talking money here plus significant shortening of the already short life. About the gas milage- don't  think it is better than the Savage.  Anytime when somebody is asking me about buying an entry level croach rocket I recomend to stay away from EX250 and buy EX500 instead- same money , but a real bike.
On top of this we are comparing aples and oranges here.
