Won't Shift Into 1st
09/08/05 at 13:14:49

Hello All,

I am pretty sure that I caused this problem but I am not sure.  The bike will shift from 2nd to neutral and then all the way up to 4th but it will not shift down to 1st.  Is there a known issue with this bike that would cause this?

If not does anyone know what the problem is likely to be?

Thanks
Tom

I have had this happen every now and the. I found that if I slowly release the clutch while applying LIGHT pressure to the shifter, it drops into first.

cracking the throttle can also work...

I usually roll mine back, as opposed to forward... or cracking the throttle...

I will try this but I think I broke it.  If I broke it what did I break?

Long story short, I was at a light it wouldn't go into first, I got embarrased and stomped the $hit out of it until it forcibly went into 1st.  Now it really doesn't want to go into first and even when I get it into first the shifter doesn't lock out.  I will still be able to push the lever down.

Thanks

Check the linkage.  There's a rod, roughly 5 or 6 inches long, with threaded ends that can become bent if you mash the shifter too much when sitting still.  I know; I've done it.  The part is called a GEAR SHIFT ROD and is part number 25525-21E50 (at least for my 1998) at RonAyers.com.  It's currently $5.04 + S/H.  If that's your problem, it's an easy fix.  I keep a spare, though I may not need it since I've stopped shifting while still.
