My less than day-old 2006 S40's front break has developed quite a squeak when I'm using it. That's not good. A day old and making weird noises? I'm hoping that that's normal for this sort of break, and that it will go away on its own...

Actually, the front brake squeak is quite normal with the LS650 ... even after the pads have broken in ... the S50/Intruder suffers from this malady too ... nothin' to worry about ... occurs mostly with light braking of the front wheel.
Anyhoo ... as I have recently learned, the OEM pads supplied stock on the S40/Savage is pretty much crap and will likely not last much past 3000mi or so ... there's not a lota meat on 'em in the first place!!

Reply #3 - 09/29/05 at 06:28:39 i have aftermarket pads and they squeak like crazy,sometimes its so bad u dont wont to even use the damm thing!! if i can calculate the stop, i will just shift down untill the light turns green. ps. the back brake squeals even worse!just a matter of time.

I mentioned this a short time ago....all you have to do is go to your local jobber (auto parts store ) and get some "brake quiet" . its basically graphite in a solution that you soak the pads in for 10 or 15 min let dry and then reinstall. stuff works great . we use it where I work (new car dealership ) when we get cheap aftermarket pads for our pre-owned dept.

had to replace pads at 3200 mi. paper thin, would never have looked at them if it had'nt been for this board. organic EBC'S, 32 bucks at stealers, did'nt want to wait for mail order. at NAPA, can of anti-squeel compound, kinda salty at 13 bucks a can, paint compound on back of pads where they contact piston and caliper, 2000 mi since installation, not a peep from front brake YET. I use it quite heavely, 70% of brake, ya know. diesel.

diesel, my original equipment pads are shot too at exactly the same milage as you ... though I'm pretty easy on the brakes. Ordered a set of SBS ceramic pads from a local Honda/aftermarket dealer last evening.
slavy ... what kinda liberal coating of silicone do you use? The stuff in an aerosol spray can? If so, I got a can of that out in the shed ...

I am using any kind of RTV silicone in a tube like a tooth paste. What it does is it coats with rubberlike film the brake pad and it muffles the vibrations of the brake pad / like if the door bell is ringing and You pur Your finger on the bell - almost no sound/ . Many years ago a very good mechanic showed that to me and I have been using it always.

Reply #12 - 09/30/05 at 19:11:37 that NAPA anti squeel stuff comes in a small can, it has a brush on the lid, kinda like neversieze, looks like thick black paint. instructions say to coat back of pad area that only contacks pistion and caliper. not a sound from pads YET. like I said, da## salty at 13 bucks a can, but enough for many,many pads.diesel

It is a blue color sort of like a spray glue, once applied to the back sides of the pads you let it sit till tacky then assemble.

Just right, no squeeks, worked well.
