Well, I finally got around to putting on the MAC muffler today.  I put in a 155 main jet and a K&N filter (stock replacement).  The only thing I didn't do was alter the spacer, mainly because trying to get those screws off the top was too much of a pain in the a$$.

Will leaving the spacer alone be a big deal?  It took me a solid four hours today to do the carb and exhaust.  I have no desire to go through that again.

What do you guys think?

PS - The MAC muffler sounds NASTY.  My neighbors aren't going to like it, but I love it!

Hey, it's all good.  Only 4 hours.  Just what other more important things are there than working on your bike?  Aside from riding, that is...Tongue

I'd go ahead and dive into the spacer....it will improve your mid range and help with the backfires and pops.

Nasty is a good thing  8)

I tooke my baffle out of my mac.  was a huge pain in the butt but I can actually feel the exhaust shooting out like 10 feet from behind the bike if not further.  It is LOUD but who likes neighbors anyway? hehehe

Rode the bike in to work Monday morning.  First long ride with the MAC muffler on. The timeline for the ride went something like this:

6:30 - 6:45 - "Now that's what a bike should sound like!"
6:45 - 7:00 - "I wonder if it might be a little too loud?"
7:00 - 7:15 - "Yeah, it's definitely a little too loud"
7:15 - 7:30 - "Are my ears ringing?"
7:30 - 7:45 - "I gotta get this ****ing pipe off the bike NOW."

Of course, I had to ride it all the way home again.  So, the stock muffler is back on the bike.  I left the K&N air filter in and the 155 is still in the carb.  If I find another pipe that'll give me a nice low rumble without the high noise level, I may try again. But for now, it's back to doing the lawnmower impersonation.

I have the MAC and if I rode without a helmet, I'd be deaf for sure.  As it is, I have considered using earplugs for longer rides but haven't done it yet.

I have a sportster muffler on mine. Not a lot louder but a realy nice throaty sound. No Complaints from the neighbors. It was also  a piece of cake to install. I picked up a 7" Heatshield from JC Whitney.

Hint on the heat shield: Call in your order, it was $5 less than on their web site.

I considered that as well, but in PA it's illegal to ride with earplugs or anything else that may impair hearing.

What kind of idiotic law is that?  Earplugs do not impair hearing...by filtering the excess noise you can better hear the smaller detail noise that you need to hear...ask any aviator.

I ride in PA a lot, and I'll guess that particular rule doesn't get enforced much.  I wear earplugs all the time with my half-helmet - the wind noise drives me nuts otherwise.  Never mind what the Screamin' Eagle muffler does after awhile.

I'm with Lancer on this one.  By shutting out wind and exhaust noise, I hear better.   I can still hear the speedo springs rattle, for example.
