Hi all - just got a pair of his & her S40 Boulevards for our wedding anniversary.  Upgraded my wife from her Zuma scooter and this is my fifth big single after a Velocette Venom ('67), Matchless, Yamaha SR500 ('78 maybe) and restored Ducati 350 SCR.  My first Suzuki was an X6 "Hustler" 250cc two-stroke twin and the second was the original "Savage", a 250cc two-stroke dual-purpose bike, around 1974.    Been wrenching bikes for years and my last obsessions were the classic bevel-gear drive Ducati desmo SuperSports.  

So this preamble leads to our 2006 LS650's.  Love the big easy torque of the single - so relaxing to chug about with that tractor motor.  Sweet handling, great looks - an instant and venerable classic that obviously has a devoted cult following for these reasons.  

Despite being a simple single I've found some aspects working on it sofar not so easy.  Getting the gas tank off to service the top end or access plug / coil is a chore as I HAVE to remove the fuel valve assy on mine.  That means drain the tank and have a bunch of spare gaskets on hand.  Not up to the first breakin service yet but access to the intake valve screws looks real cramped, and I sure hope I can get to all the head bolts for retorquing without pulling the motor (as the Clymer manual seems to suggest).  

Oh yeah, that lean Mikuni BS40!  Took a lot of trial and error to dial in the air screw (1and 1/8 turns out) to eliminate a horrendous backfire on rolling the throttle shut and when switching off.  Now the motor has the characteristic "farts" once in a while but nothing worse.  

So we're having a blast on our pair of thumpers and will avail ourselves of this great forum for tips and feedback.  My only project from stock is to fit a "Baron" tach on the bar but the coil wiring is kind of tight and have to find some "metric" 5mm spade flag connectors.  Was going to ground to the coil mounting screws but even my impact driver wouldn't budge them without damaging the head.  Nothing's changed in forty years it seems!

u can always rejet to a 150 or 152.5 to reduce farting hehe.  I got a 95 with air pod filter and open exhaust.
Worked great for me..  there are many secrets in this site but dont forget to search before asking Smiley

oh and u might want to bump up ur pilot jet to a 55

Oops, sorry...... Newbie error.  I now realize this should have been posted under the existing subject "How You Came to Ride a Savage/S40?"  Should have done more searching first I guess.  I did search more on the tachometer installation and decided against this.  First, not needed for a big torquey single and second, a lot of users of this particular tach seem to complain about erratic performance (needle jumping all over).

We have a running debate on to tach or not to tach - I'm not going to have an engine I care about with out a tach. The barrons do not jump around if you get a proper connection on the coil and ground - and look cool as the come but add a tach holder like mine and you have a mighty fine teet on a boar I tell you! 8) 8) 8) 8)

Thanks everybody for the welcome; it's nice to have a friendly and helpful crowd here.  Reelthing - now you've got me thinking about the Tach again.  Pros - looks great (the Barons bullet style), will help set my idle and maintain breakin rev limits.  Cons - wiring connectors too large, and Suzuki OEM 5mm spade connectors real hard to find.  Also I worry if the tach might eventually fry the ignitor due to change in load (impedance).  Finally, I read about erratic performance here: http://baronscustom.com/html/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3899
So I appreciate real-world feedback to convince me the labor investment is worth it.  At least I'll have more practice pulling the gas tank off!

When I first order in the barons blackfaced bullet I had also read about the jumping around. Right after I put it on it was doing this some and the engine died and left me on the road for a few minutes - I had used the cheesy connectors that came with the tach and the double blade adapter had worked it self loose on the coil - in the end I went to a boat store - west marine I think - and picked up some higher quality tinned connectors - I use these on boat electronics around the saltw@ter because they do not corrode as fast and provide a much more positive connection - I picked up some shielding tape to cut out the rf interference if it had any but have not used it and no jumping of the needle after the solid connects - other than what you would expect for our thump'n engine - not quite as smooth running as a 6 cylinder honda for sure!

You can do this without pulling the tank but it is much easier the first time if you do.

A couple of things...
-I have had my tach for a couple of years and no problem at all
-when removing my tank I lift just a little and then move the rear of the tank sideways toward the petc0ck side enough to clear the frame rail (about 2 ") and then lift it.
-you might consider going one size larger on the pilot and main jets.  It will do wonders for performance...and those nasty exhaust _arts.
