Pam8586 Ex Member	Charging Battery 04/08/06 at 11:51:58 Hi. Pam here. I need to charge or replace the battery on my 89 Savage but have few tools. Cant tell which side positive...cant see any markings. If I need to take battery off, is the terminal bolt a standard size? HELP!!!

When you remove the terminal bolt, a nut remains under the terminal. Clean and reuse them .

The original bolts also had a phillips head in them. Be sure and undo the negative one first !! Other wise when you undo the + one your tool may touch metal and become an arc welder. or worse yet explode the nearby discharged battery. The - (neg) can be accessed after removing the seat, remove the bolt and wire end from the - post of the battery. The nuts are almost captive and should stay inplace while you remove the battery. Be sure they are both back in place when you replce the battery. Max

If I were to have lengthy down time due to weather I would replace the standard battery with an AGM (absorbed glass mat) battery -- they self-discharge at a far lower rate so that there is no need for a trickle charger. Not to mention it is maintainance free.

CAUTION, CAUTION. Charging batteries produces explosive hydrogen gas (remember the Hindenburg? Yeah, me either.) So: unplug charger from wall BEFORE removing clips from battery!

Why do I say this? When I was in HS auto shop, a numnutz classmate walked over to a charging battery, decided it was done, and pulled the clips off. The resulting explosion blew out the side of the battery that didn't face him, but it left some nice etching on the concrete floor to remind everyone else.

It's best to pull the bat. out of the bike before charging, to take the vent caps off, but at least disconnect the bike's cables from it, so you don't fry any semiconductor components.

+ and - should be marked on the side of the battery, near the terminals, or molded into the top of the battery, near the terminals.

The nut stays captured inside the battery terminal. While you are there, coat the terminal and the cable with a bit of grease (I have a can of CRC Dielectric Grease for this purpose) to prevent later corrosion.

All you have to do to get to the positive is open up the tool box and you will see it. To replace the battery disconnect the neg. and then the positive using a 10mm wrench and a phillips. Then you will need to remove three phillips screws on the inside of the tool box and remove the plate. After that the battery simply slides out. Take it with you so you can get rid of it when you buy a new one and match it up. I had trouble finding one with a drain on the right side, but found a sealed direct fit at batteries plus. To install revearse process. You can install a lead off the positive for easier access later if you want.
