Front Brakes

Just wanted an opinion. I bought my 04 Savage (new) last spring and put 1800 miles on it. Just got it back out from a long winter and took it to the dealership to get a new inspection sticker, found out my front brakes were wore out already. I know i'm a newbie but I thought I would get more than 1800 miles out of my brake pads. Is this average or am I using my front brakes way to much? Back brake doesn't seem to give me much stopping power. I try to apply both brakes when coming to a stop. Can any one give this newbie some advice ? Love my Savage but new brakes every year or more often (I'm hoping to do alot more riding this year)?

Mine were nearly gone at 2,000 miles. I like the feel of the SBS 581HF pads I'm using now, though I won't know how long they'll last just yet.

Mine were shot at 2000 miles, the stock pads just don't seem to last. Plenty of aftermarket pads out there, just watch out for the brakes grabbing during the first 100 miles or so.

Is there a certain brand/type of pad that seems to be the favorite of you guys here on the forum?  Where are you getting your best deals on pads at?

I like EBC. But I run Emgos from my work. $23.95 per set for pads, $21.95 for shoes. Oh, those are before my discount... Roll Eyes  FWIW, my stock front pads lated from 98-05. Course, the caliper didn't work...

Couple thousand miles sounds about right if it's mostly stop and go mileage like a daily city comute - it if's mostly cruise miles they would last much longer - went through several sets last year when the '95 was the only ride in the garage.

Feels like the ebc organic work well and cause the least amount of wear on the rotor, but wear out the fastest,  the sbs ceramic feel like they work a bit better as they are hgher friction pads and last longer but they also seem to wear the rotor some.

I view them as routine maint just like the engine oil and can be changed faster than the oil for that matter, less than 10 minutes if you take your time.

Best deals have came off ebay - under 10 bucks - maybe $15 with shipping - try to keep a new set hanging on the wall here -

out there looking around I see some of the SBS ceramics for $19 w/shipping - also a new item - a gold plated master cylinder cover... now that might look like a diamond in a goats as.... nevermind

Thanks for the info. I guess that will just be a part of my regular maintence. Well worth it for all the enjoyment I'm getting out of my Savage. Thanks Again.

I concur what others have said. The OEM pads give rather short term service. You should get much better mileage when you switch to quality aftermarket pads.
