Funny Cold Start!

When i cold start my bike, I have to pull choke half way, start engine and push back in choke imediately or it will die. Then it idles fine. No warm up with choke on. It wasent like that before i did some mods like, total carb clean, 155 main jet, 55 pilot jet, K&N cone filter, adjust mixture screw. Already had a harley muffler. Adjusted valves and replaced leaky head plug & spark plug.

My 87 hates the choke also...   I pull the choke on and crank 5 times then push it in all the way and she starts..

I have found my 02 to be a very cold natured bike.  Doesn't like to run in cooler weather at all.

when cold pull choke out 1/2 way start bike idle 2-3 minutes bike starts to sputter, push in choke, ride away.  Bike does not like to idle when cold but once it warms up, it's all good.

yes, that sounds like normal operation there. But mine will die if i dont push the choke back emediately after starting. But, it idles fine like that so its all good.

With the "choke" on KLX there are only two positions on and off, so full choke and turn over for about 15 seconds and she starts, run for 30 secs with choke switch choke off and drive away.

You can give her a squirt of fuel with the accelerator pump to get her to start if she is not dead cold.

Mine (see signature) used to act like that.  Turns out the vacuum diaphram in the petc0ck was leaking and raw fuel was being dumped into the intake manifold, causing a rich condition.  I never figured this out until the problem got so bad that the bike wouldn't run well.

IHTH someone.

My 2002 is like Gasab44.
After the mods, I didn't have to use the choke anymore.
I do have to run it at 1500rpm or so for a minute or so before it will stay running.

My Bike is bone stock and the usual cold-start procedure is pull choke out full, start the Bike, push choke in to 1/2 right away ... let idle for a min. Gently Ride away and after about a kilometer or so push choke all the way in ... has worked fine for me since I bought the Bike back in '03 ...

Mine is exactly the same, with the exception of idle time, only takes about 30 secs or less before it starts to sputter and has to be pushed back in, with the mods listed below. If it's above 60 degrees I don't use it at all.

Whoa.  Even if the diaphram was leaking, fuel shouldn't be going anywhere unless the float needle is leaking also.

I have since found with the FCR on the KLX that with "choke" on and a squirt of accelerator pump she starts in 5-10 seconds and drives with no "choke" after about 30.

Greg650,
Ooohyeh... ,  believe me,  the leaky petc0ck vacuum will let gas thru.  Not down the fuel line but down the vacuum line.  Murderous rich!

So, if the diaphragm goes bad, can I just stick it on prime or am I just gonna have to walk home? I guess the reason I ask is, do I need to replace this before it goes out? It's an 05 model, do I need to hurry? What is the replacement?
