Ok I have heard alot of members talking ( i got to 80 in 3rd gear )fast this and blah blah blah that.  It seems even with all my mods that about 80 mph it is running out of steam.  With alot more pavement I could l hit 90 maybe 95( with rpms going crazy) but 100 just seems impossible without miles of open highway or a very steep hill

Heck I can tell a huge difference if I tuck my legs and arms in as well as bending my whole body down in a death roll(or at least a potential one ) haha.

Also I am not using miles and miles of highway to get to 80 because it gets there pretty fast.  Huge improvement over the stock setup.

So anyone have any proof of anything over 100mph?  No vephor computers pics either haha.  I can reprogram my sigma to make believe 199mph hehe.  ( no offense lancer)

As mentioned in "another thread", I have hit 100 one time on my bike.  As soon as the needle touched 100, I backed off as I was doing a test run.  It was with me fully tucked in and a windless day.  I've only done it once, don't have a need or a desire to do it again.

I'm just gonna mention one thing on the "verifiable proof" thing...  I used to own a GZ250 and post on a forum for that bike before buying this bike.  It was not uncommon at all to find discrepancies among the many bikes over there to find one that would max out at 70, and one that would max out at, say, 92.  In fact, it happened more often that I care to remember.

Everybody tried to figure out why, nobody could put a finger on it.  That said, I know what my bike will do, have no need to "verify" it to anybody, and fully understand that the next guys bike may either do more or do less than mine.  It's just the nature of the machine.

All I can say is all the stars fell in alignment the day I wound mine out.  Got lucky on tuning, got lucky with perfect windshield alignment, got lucky that the wind was nil, got lucky that the temps and humidity were right.  All those things play into what a bike (or any machine for that matter) will do on any given day.

Besides that, I don't trust myself enough to let go of the handlebar to snap a picture at that speed!  Grin

Haha I know all too well the differences in our model.  For instance, my forward controls prob wont fit ur bike hehe.

ANyways I was hoping for a dyno chart.  Not a pic of a speedo.  I got photoshop and I can alter that too.  Its hard to believe there could be a 20 mph difference in two "tuned bikes".  I would understand if one is stok and the other isnt.

So how many miles did it take u to break that speed?
Maybe I need lancers cam or carb for real.  Thanks guys

Those last 10 mph were an exercise in patience.  My bike will run right up to 88-90, then anything above that requires flat roads, no wind and a LOT of time.  Grin

I've got a stretch of highway close to me that is flatter than a pancake for about a 10 mile stretch.  I didn't pay any attention, but I'd say a good 6 miles of that was used before I finally saw the century mark.

One thing I notice on my bike, is if I wind it to the throttle stop, it won't do it, but if I feather that throttle and just keep it barely off the full throttle stop, it will be more prone to hit 100.

Truth be told, anything over about 80 is faster than I care to go on the Savage, and I don't even have the need to do that on the interstates around here.  Seems as though our drivers here are fairly obedient and kind, 70-75 on the open interstate is more of the rule than the exception.

I've been wanting to do a dyno on my bike, but I've got to do some checking to see just who actually does it around my area.

96 bone stock on the interstate with a slight down hill grade. if only there was a 6th gear.

No offence taken Jim.  I understand your questions and where you are coming from.  There is nothing wrong in asking genuine questions.

Just as Radioman said, there are a lot of factors that affect the max  speed of any  machine on any given day.  I do a lot of tinkering on my bike, frequently swaping carbs and exhausts, so there are not many direct comparison days that I can point to, but the fact is that there can easily be 5mph difference +/- in top speed any day of the week.  I have hit 100 sitting straight up several times (and done so within 1/2  mile) , and on other days I have topped out in the lower 90's, with the bike just not wanting to do any more regardless of the distance.  When I do a speed test I do it on a flat road, and if at all possible I do it going in both directions just in case there is a slight slope, or breeze, or whatever.  That way, if there is a difference, by going in both directions it will tend to cancel out that difference.  The fastest I have ever gone on this Savage is 105...once, just past 100  2-3  other times.  As far as I can tell the speedometer seems to be pretty accurate, which is suprising to me since stock motorcycle speedo's are notoriously not accurate...at least the old style ones anyway.

Radioman, you mention that your bike runs better at about 7/8's throttle than at full throttle, which would indicate that you are likely running rich on the top end.  Something like that can quite easily make a 5-10 mph difference in top speed when compared to a carb which is jetted/tuned more precisely.  It does not take much of a carb, or timing, or valve, or ignition, or tire pressure, or other issue to affect the performance of a machine.  It is a constant effort to keep the thing in peak condition.  It is a challenge for sure.

The first non-stock carb I ever put on my Savage was the best performing carb of all of the ones I have tried.  I wish I still had that carburetor...I really do.  There was something about it...not sure exactly what it was...but it was different.  It pulled as strong as any other in the low-mid range but when it got in the high range it was just amazing...it was as if it did not want to stop...so strong.   It was some kind of take-off on an Edelbrock.  It had a round slide like the MIkuni/Amal but had the jets/needle like the Edelbrock Quicksilver.    Edelbrock says they never made one like that, but it did have the Edelbrock name on it.  I even bought extra needles for it.  Anyway, it was a great carb.  Stuff like that can make a significant difference in performance.

I have no proof of my bikes performance, or lack thereof on other occasions, but I stand by my claims.  When I talk of what I have done I try to keep it as straight as possible, no if's, and's, or but's.  I think I have some integrity in this regard.  I have tried to be square with everyone to the best of my ability, and I think most people I have dealt with will back me up on this.

I am excited about the possibilities of the Veypor, though at this point I am not sure that I am using it exactly right yet.  With more experience, and more data to look at and compare, I feel confident that it will be a valueable performance tuning aid and useful road guage.   No doctoring of the numbers either. Grin

Lancer hit it on the head with how a bike responds.  It's all due to the carb and exhaust.  My bike still stock, and I'm a big guy, can still do 85 without much problem.  Do I want to go that fast?  Uh no.  But once in a while I need to *try* to keep up with a 1200s Bandit.  Really who wants to top out a small bike like this anyways?  I think 75 is all the faster I want to go...

well thanks for all your comments and tips.  One day Ill scout out a flat road and maybe a large hill and dog it hehe.  I do kinda believe the road I have been using is too short because of a curve.  Something u never want to hit going over 60, a least this curve.

Thanks again for all your patience and integrity.  After reading my first message IM surprised no one got pissed off haha.

I really do think that changing the stock carb maybe my best bet.  Its really hard to believe they want so much for a stock carb to begin with.  I guess it is because it is built for fuel economy and not so much for preformance.

One day Ill have enough cash for one of the many goodies lancer has to offer.  Until then I will try and see how fast I can go.

So do you think my 152.5 main jet could be a little much?  I've got a 150 in my tool box I could slap in there and see how it does.

That's exactly why I don't care if I ever hit it again.  I just took mine up there to see what I had in reserve.

The stock carb was specifically designed for economy and minimal exhaust emissions.  Comparing the BS40 (B. S.-4-0 performance) and even a basic performance carb like the Amal Mark II's and MIkuni VM's is starting on uneven ground from the get-go.  The BS40 will be outperformed by a 34mm Mikuni VM.  Heck, even a 32mm might even put the stock carb down in a power comparison.  The BS40 does smooth and easy very well, and can be improved upon (look at Odar's dyno chart), but there are definite limits in power and responsiveness.  And as mentioned above, the exhaust must be addressed as well...can't do one without the other and expect really good results.
There are other issues of course like head design (small valves and ports), cam profile, header size, non-adjustable ingnition timing, stuff like that.  And that is just the engine.  The brakes and suspension are minimal from a performance standpoint.

It all depends on what you want to do with your bike.  If you like the easy cruise down the road at 55-65 mph,  then the stock bike is just great for that and you don't need to spend any money for upgrades at all (jet/tune for best fuel/air mix is the exception).  If you want to go faster, accelerate quicker, brake harder or carve the mountain roads with more gusto then you should look for upgrades.
