Threebond 1216 = Permatex 599?

My "dealer" doesn't stock Threebond 1216 for the rubber plug in the cylinder head. Other forums directed me to Permatex 599, which - gee, it's grey, like Threebond 1216 - and appears to be sort of comparable.
Anyway, I'll try it out and report back. It's a lot cheaper than $20 for some Threebond that I'll use at 600-mile service and then maybe never again.

that's what the shop manual calls for but I've been using the permatex hightemp copper stuff - works mighty fine - and where it calls for a thread lock I'll use the blue loctite if it looks like it needs it - man I stay away from the red loctite except to keep the crank seals in a high compression 2-stroke

Threebond makes great stuff. I use the low-strength anaerobic threadlocker all the time on my dirt bike - I think it's softer than Loctite 242 (the blue, "medium" stuff).
I have the Permatex Ultra Gray now so I'll give it a shot. I do like that copper stuff - I have used it to seal exhaust pipe leaks!

The reason Suzuki dealer did not have Treebond 1216 is because You are supposed to use Suzuki bond 1216 /part # 99104-31160/. The dealer usually doesn't stock this item , so You have to wait and I remember , it was pretty costly.

Here's the link to Three Bond's product description:
http://www.threebond.co.jp/en/product/series/sealants/1200list.html
Suzuki dealer here in SoCal didn't stock it. Their mechanics use Yamabond #4 instead. The factory assembly also didn't use the grey 1216 sealant on my bike but some black goop so you don't HAVE to use the Suzuki-labelled 1216 as the manual orders. I got some anyway (two days from LA warehouse) and it worked fine. It's a nice pliable putty that cleans off easily at rebuild time. However, around $20 a tube AND once the tube seal is broken the shelf life is limited - kinda wasteful if you're not on an assembly line!
I may be wrong but I don't think Permatex and Three Bond have any connection.

FWIW...
When I did the 600 mile service on my bike (see signature), the dealer sold me a tube of Threebond 1104 for the rubber plug.
It worked fine, but when I took the plug out for service at 5700 miles, I found that this sealant was extremely difficult to remove from the plug and the valve cover. I didn't do a good enough job of cleaning it off and experienced a rather extravagant oil leak when I started the engine after slapping everything back together.
I had to put a new plug in. I used Permatex Ultra-Copper this time:

End of problem.

OOOkay, since all I am doing is changing the oil & setting the valves I suppose I am overlooking something in the servicing of the bike. What's this with a plug?

You need to remove the plug if you perform the head bolt torque procedure as per the FSM (supposed to be done every 3500-4000 miles).

If you don't mind me asking, is'nt that stuff supposed to be sticky?

I couldnt find the 1216 either, and the dealer didnt have any in stock of their stuff( how do they fix bikes?).
so i found an old motorhead shop, he sold me three bond 1104. not one leak where i used it! just one gasket left to replace and she wont leak anymore
with 3 bikes on the porch something will need some
ps. the fine print says to store it cap facing down to prevent it from drying out, so its in a cup on the work bench shelf.

Krop,
It goes on kind of runny, but cures to be flexible and sticks very tenaciously to whatever it is on.

Has anyone tried using Loctite 5926 Blue Silicone Sealant ? Do you reckon it can replace the Three Bond 1216 called for in the service manual?
