FUEL VALVE PROBLEM?
05/13/06 at 12:30:23

ok guys, i got a small problem with my 96 savage. When i turn my fuel valve to ON, my bike putters and runs crappy, even some backfiring happens (Seems like the engine isnt getting enough fuel).  But when i set the fuel valve to PRI it runs fine.

The problem is it should be running in ON good, instead of PRI. In the manual it says you shouldnt run it in PRI that long, ON should be the standard.  Any suggestions to what the problem might be?  Why is ON running crappy, but PRI runs good?  Ive run seafoam through it, and still this problem is occuring.

Any input is much appreciated!

Thank you

hey johnny,,  the on and res work off engine vac ,, a little hose running off the carb to a vac  operated valve which only lets fuel thru the fuel valve when running ..

the pri is used for re priming the carb after working on it and dosnt require vac,,  my guess hole in hose or rotten and leaking vac or bad vac valve not letting enough fuel thru  .

might wait for some others to chime in ,,, hope it helps

Sounds right to me - check for cracks or lose vac hose - and check for gas in the vac hose - these petc0cks diaphrams have been known to bust and let raw fuel run back up the vac line filling engine crankcase with fuel and frying the thing - check your oil level and smell it - is it too full? - or does it smell of gasoline?

Replace the vacuum hose and make sure it has a good tight fit, and if necessay use little clamps on each end .

It is a 96 model and the vac hose (if original) is waaaaay past replacement time, don't even bother trying to check the hose for cracks...just replace it.

It sounds like a plugged  f. valve. If You want to verify- make sure You have enough gas in the tank , turn in ON  and disconnect the vacuum and the gas hoses from the carb. There should not be anything going out of the gas hose. Turn in PRI and the gas will start to flow. Turn back in ON and now suck the carb. end of the vac. hose, imitating the intace vacuum. Compare the gas flow now with the gas flow in PRI. I bet it will be a lot slower. Most probable, You will have to pull te petcock and clean  it.
