Cam chain change (Read 5 times)

Cam chain change

Hi
I have started to disassemble the engine since I have to change the sealing between cylinder and head.
I have experienced problem to get off the header with the engine in the frame. Do I have to take it out from the frame?  Its a MY96

No you should not have too. You mean trouble removing the head cover right.

It is a little tricky gettting it over the cam sprocket, it can only come out from one side.

I really hope that I do not have to take the engine out of the frame. But, it is not the head over the cam sprocket, it is the cylinder head I want to take off so I can change the gasket between cylinder and head.
There are 3 pin bolts at the same lenght and the fourth are longer and how I even try I can not get it over the fourt bolt. Have tried to turn the cylinder head to the right but still it hit the frame.

Should I dare to try to "unscrew" the pin bolt and take it out or is the risk to break the pin bolt too bid??

I hope You can overcome some laps in my english, it sometime may become Swedish - English

Ssk,

I haven't taken the cylinder head off of mine yet, so I cannot tell you for sure. But my understanding is that it should come off with the engine still in the frame.

Anyone else know for sure?

Don't worry about your english, mines not much better and I don't even know a second language.

In my experience the cylinder will not slide off over the studs in frame. However your idea of backing the studs out will work, just double nut the upper end and tighten them together(so the bind against each other) so you can use a wrench to turn the bottom one and unthread the stud from the case. Why did you think the head gasket was a problem, it is unusable now, but in years of following the savage forums, head gaskets have no been a documented concern, only the plug(cap) over the short stud and the special shaped o-ring between the cover and cylinder head. It is too bad the parts systems doesn't show if you need the plug/cap then you need the o-ring, and copper washers also. Guess if they had half smart parts guys they would know what is related. O well I'm trying to write down what is needed for a given repair as we have 3 in the hood now and I found another one out on the old AFB last week. Stopped by and left him a FSSNOC application and my  name and phone number so we could schedule a ride. Max

I am glad that worked for you...I have been strugglig with that idea for a few days now,thinking that stud is spaghetti thin and very likely to snap with any sideways loading.I've got a severely cooked exhaust valve and was dreading the engine removal
