engine won't crank
05/27/06 at 16:38:55

I know this has probably been answered before, but I took the head off and did the head cap plug replacement, also took the clutch and alternator covers off to look for a possible culprit to my knocking noise, nothing found, anyway, got it all back together and now it won't even crank. The de-compression lever actuates up and down but that is all.

Any help out there would be appreciated. I rechecked everything I could think of.

Thanks in advance.

Ready to check off the basics?? Will the starter engage?? Is the bike getting fuel to the carbs?? Can you get fuel draining from the fuel lines?? Is the plug getting a spark?? Can you verify the spark?? Is the exhaust pluged??  Can you feel the exhaust when someone tries to start the engine?? What do you smell when you feel for the exhaust?? Get back to us when you can anwser those questions.

Ok, starter does not engage. Fuel to carbs yes, fuel draining in  gravity fuel line yes, vacuum line no since the engine is not cranking there is no vacuum,no on spark to plug, exhaust is not plugged, no smells, When the key is set to on, lights come on, hit starter switch, and only thing heard is the de-compression valve opening with a clank clank clank....what the heck is wrong with this bike?

clutch lever pulled in, kickstand up. nothing.  :'(

first thing I would do is check to make sure that the starter is getting power. Is the battery fully charged?? connections on the starter tight??

well it sounds like u put that washer in the generator cover in the wrong spot, its been a while since i messed with a savage but if i remember right it dosent go on the starter shaft. if it's on the wrong place, when u tighten the cover up it will lock up the starter.

I'm going to try that torque, the parts diagram for the suzuki shows a washer on both sides of the gear on the shaft, but I only had one, maybe it should'nt have any. or maybe it has to have 2? I'll mess with it, thanks for the tip! Smiley

Torque, you are the savage king!! Took that washer off the gear on the starter shaft, put it on the other gear and presto magico, started right up. You saved me bucketloads of stress, and I thank you.
