New poster and question

Hey guys and gals... great forum!

I've been out of biking for just about 20 years to the day until my wife recently talked me into getting back into it. Guess she got tired of me spending all my free time gaming on my PC. (Confession... I'm a hardcore gamer as well as a former hard core biker!!!)

So I figured I'd get my feet wet with a small but reasonable bike to begin with. Lady luck was on my side and two days after starting a search for a bike, I came across and settled on a '96 LS 650 with only 8,000 clicks on it. Bike's in great shape and runs liek a charm and I was able to pick it up for much less than I was budgeting to spend. Couldn't be happier with it!!!

Having said all that, my question is pretty basic. Back in the good old days it was fairly simple to align the headlight. You simply placed the bike "X" feet away from a wall and have a mark on the wall at "X" feet and inches high and then adjust the light to the mark on the wall. I've got a feeling that the alignment of the headlight on this bike is out so I want to align it myself. Can I do the same thing or do I have to take it to a shop where they have the alignment equipment to do it? If I can do it myself, any tips or suggestions such as the "where-to's" and "how-to's" to do it myself would be appreciated.

Edit: Thought I'd throw another question out there as well. It didn't take me long to learn about the "backfire issue" with these bikes. From reading up, there seems to be a set carb mod to eliminate the problem. Does anyone have a link to a step-by-step walkthrough of the mod? Would be much appreciated. In the meantime I'll just continue to read through the forums and enjoy the wealth of information here.

Man... that was quick. Thanks for the links. Had a quick scan and they appear to be just the ticket!!!

I've got a week off coming up and I'll plan to do the mod then. Based on what I scanned over quickly, looks to be about a half day's job or less? If that's the case, then I'll do it first day of vacation so I can enjoy the rest on the wide open road.

welcome, what part of the world do you call home? yep, about a half day for the carb mods, if all goes well the first time. depending on where you're at and what you're running for a muffler will determine which main jet you'll size up to and where you set the needle.

Thanks for the welcome azjay.

Home is Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Windsor is just across the Detroit river from.... yep, you guessed it, Detroit MI. Wink

I used to live in Collingwood ON. right on Georgian Bay. Now that I've got wheels with a saddle again I sure wished I was back up there. Some great cruising scenery all around and about 15 minutes away from Wasaga Beach which has the longest fresh water, sandy beach in North America if I'm not mistaken. And you can imagine the scenery that goes along with that!!! Grin (Ducks quickly after the missus reads my post!!!)
