Carb slide galling at <1000 miles.

I went to do the spacer mod and found the carb slide galled in less than 1000 miles Lips Sealed

I bent my needle a bit drilling out one of the screws that holds in the locking plate inside the slide. I'll order another... but in the course of riding after, I can tell you what a sticking slide feels like - hesitation, worse backfiring. I ride 4 miles a day on gravel - I wonder if dust is sneaking in somewhere. I greased the rim of the stock air filter (cleaned it twice in 1000 miles, then bought a K&N).

The spacer mod didn't fix the backfiring - my friend suggests that the pilot jet needs to be bigger. I'm heading over to Bikebandit to get my jet needle - do they have larger pilot jets? I looked around the aftermarket section but didn't find the BS40SS carb listed.

I drilled out the cover over my idle mixture needle and found little if any change in idle speed. ????

Yes, right through the K&N - they allow a lot more air through but they also filter less - the number K&N at one time stated was their filter trap'd 95% of the dirt of a stock paper filter - well if your in a very dusty world 5% is a lot stuff. If you do not want to use the stock paper filter you might want to look into one of the multi element oil foam filters - I use these on my engines that live around the sand.

Also make more than sure the clamps around the intake tube are tught and sealed

I have read in here that the stock filter seals poorly, and I bet that's what it was. $98 at bikebandit for a new diaphragm/slide - not going there quite yet.

I've posted here a couple times that a K&N is the worst at filtering fine particulate dirt. Next would be oiled foam, followed by the stock paper filter.

The stock paper filter does the best filtering.

I wouldn't replace it because some of the black coating is worn off - just the needle it sounds like - and clean the slide and the bore very well - but do NOT grease the slide in any way with anything- tighten up the clamps on the intake and give it a go

Way back on Bert's forum this issue came up and many of us have galled slides. Some experienced slide hang up and poor performance and seemed to solve the problem by using "marvel mystery oil" in the fuel.

If you think the Savage diaphram/slide is expensive, I have a Kawasaki Mule project that I'm at the carbs point on and they're $1120.00 ea., takes 2. Saving grace is new carbs are only $600.0 for the pair and I get all new parts. Max

Reply #6 - 05/31/06 at 13:37:03 I've been using two ounces of two stroke oil in every third fillup instead of MMO. Seems to work the same as a lube for the carb slide. Guess I'm a bit lazy, all I do is dump a gallon of premix in the tank once in a while .

I'm going to have a good look this weekend. It seems to me that the area is open to the air; since I ride on gravel, instant scratching occurs. If so, I'll devise a tiny foam filter to affix to the area. I don't think I want to burn 2-stroke oil. I MAY, though, take it to the dealer and complain, and ask for a new slide, since it's under warranty.
