Rear brake cable for brake light
06/01/06 at 11:08:11

I went to take my ride test for my Bike license and the bike didn't pass the inspection because the rear brake would not activate the brake light.

I got it home and found that the cable was disconnected from the pedal. I saw a little tap that looks like where the cable was supposed to go but it seems to be on backwards and I don't see how even if it was put on the other way how the cable was supposed to attach.

Any ideas how to solve this?

P.S. I know it is the brake light cable because when I pull on it the brake light comes on.

Saved your bike - excellent.
You should find a little hole or hook that cable goes to, so that pressing down  on the brake lever pulls  the cable. I don't know this bike in particular, but that's the way they usually work.

Here are some pics maybe they will help. They are of my controls which are a little different since I moved them out but the idea is the same.

I haven't saved it yet. I have paid the interest so they won't sell it. I now have another month to get the rest of it.

This problem accured before I pawned it and just now have had the time to ask about it.

Steelwolf, that does look like the set up on my 2000 Savage. What kind of pin/clip is used to keep the brake light cable from coming loose from that little tab? And any ideas on where to get one?

It seems to be just a pin (not sure of the size) with your average garden variety cotter pin in it. It should be the same one holding the rear brake cable on the linkage. Just take it loose and add the brake switch cable to it. The same pin holds it all to the pedal/extension (whichever the case may be).

Which piece(s) are you missing?

As for the pawn shop just keep paying the intrest. That'll keep 'em happy. A buddy of mine pawned a shotgun his great grandfather had given him. He left it in pawn for almost a year just paying the intrest.  ShockedSentimental value I guess. Roll Eyes

Where the brake light cable goes into the "L" fitting. At the very end of the cable, what type of pin/clip keeps the cable from falling out of the "L" fitting? (I hope that makes sense)

Perfect sense! Grin Best I can tell the cable just goes through the "L" and is then crimped on the end to keep it from pulling out. If you have all the pieces and the cable is just pulling out of the brass "L" then maybe you could try putting it back in the "L" and bending it over or re-crimping. Or maybe buy the smallest cable clamp you can find @ the hardware store and clamp it on the end of the cable to keep it from pulling out. Undecided

That's probably what I will end up doing, and if that don't work, I'll try to make something. Maybe grind a groove around the end and try to attach some kind of circle clip.

But thanks for the help SteelWolf, it came in real handy knowing exactly what the setup is supposed to look it.

When I fixed mine I used the bendable horsehoe type retainer from an old carburetor kit. Was the accelerator pump clip from an old Rochester 2GC according to my notes. A good old time auto parts store might have some in the back from broken/returned carb kits, or if there is a carb rebuilder in your area they would have one. Happy looking. Max
