What do you do if you find yourself in a place where you find only full serve gas stations, or New Jersey where they don't let you touch thier pumps?

Do you push your bike to a self serve, or is it ok to ask them to do it yourself?

I don't know the laws there... but I've heard of people getting really pissed off if you try to pump your own gas.  I think it's like that in Oregon or somewhere up north as well.  Stupid laws if you ask me.

Wow, I've never heard of that. Every time I pull up to a full serve, the jockey just stands there all nervous, with the pump out at arms length, ready to hand it off to me, like he thinks it might be a better idea if I do it myself, because he might wind up dead. At 5'4", 120lbs. I'm not a very intimidating person. But the idea of a territorial pump jockey is just too funny.

And laws?? They actually inacted laws that protect territorial gas station attendants?

Yeah, in those states, for "safety reasons" you are not allowed to pump your own gas.

In my Mustang, I always planned my gas stops to avoid needing it in New Jersey, but with the S40, I can't do that because of it's limited range.

I swear, if a gas jockey tried to fill up my tank and got gas everywhere, I'd stuff him into my gas tank.

So it is ok then to request to do it yourself?

Here in the Netherlands you can hardly find a station that pums gas. It's all DIY.

I don't blame the guy for not wanting to be stuffed into your gas tank, no laws here but at the full service stations here they just hand me the nozzle and I do it  myself.  btw just how mean do you look. Grin

I've never had that problem, even in the "Independent Soviet Republic of Portland".  Working in bike shops, and looking a bit like Charles Manson, does have its advantages...

Find a station willing to let you pump it yourself. Or make the pump jockey wrap a rag around the filler opening to catch any splash out.

I honestly can't remember the last time I saw a full-service gas station.

I was wondering this myself when I rode to NYC a few weeks back.  I stopped in NJ and the attendant just handed me the nozzle.  First and only fillup in NJ with the bike.

My son is stationed in NJ with the Air Force, I must say that I have never in my life seen such a "PROGRESSIVE" state that is so freaking backwards, inside out and upside down.
