Got tired of chasing down pops, and not being able to hear myself think when riding, and tired of noise inducing migraine headaches (which I get anyhow, but this triggers it worse), so I yanked the exhaust and took it back to stock.  I've been talking about it for a while now, so I finally did it today.

Went back to the stock pilot jet, stayed with the 1/2 spacer, took the main jet to a 150 and put the stock can back on it.  Also stayed with the K&N drop-in and the desnorkel.

No, it doesn't sound big, sounds more like a Volkswagen  Roll Eyes, but I can live with that.  Probably by the end of the year or early next year we'll be adding a second bike to the stable anyhow for those two-up excursions.  I'm looking at either a Sportster or a C50.  Really like the C50, so we'll see how funds go.

As far as performance goes, the bike is surprisingly strong.  I have no problem going to 90 with it, and to be quite honest, I have no need to go that fast anyhow.  Top end is strong with the 150 main, no bogging down at full throttle, so I'm comfortable with that.

Most importantly, I have no backfires, pops, farts, poofs, or any other noise other than normal exhaust, and I LIKE THAT!!!

To be certain, I'm not against any of the mods people do to the Savage.  In fact, it performs quite well that way.  I just don't have the time to spend chasing rabbits down trails to get it just right.  Now, I know its just right for what I use it for.

If it's what you're wanting, then it's the right way to go, as far as I can tell.  

I suppose that we all chase after mods to make the bike what we want it to be.  So if it's alreayd right for you, why change it, right?

After all, Vroom's idea for the savage isn't anything like mine!

So you ended up with a K&N and larger pilot and main jets?

Anyway, it's all about what you want.

Of course you could take the stock muffler and ...

I agree with you.  I took off the Jardine pipe that was on mine and installed a Sportster muff and would probably be happy with the stock one if I had it.  Nothing against loud pipes...as long as they are on someone else's ride.  I while I'm riding I enjoy the peace of the scenery and the alone time to think.

Actually I went back to the orignal pilot, and stepped down to a 150 main from a 152.5.

I'm going to do a little investigating on the stock mufflers and what I assume you are referring to -- drilling them?

I will do the Sportster muffler eventually.  Right now, every one I've run across on eBay has been going for outrageous prices.  So, I'll wait until a good deal comes along.  I had a Sportster muffler at one time, but when I went to take it off to get the adapter made, I mangled it up getting it off the header pipe and trashed it.

so what muff did you take off???think ive got a hd muff with the adapt in it (couldnt get it out so left it) its an 80s model with the tab mount.. pm me  if you want..yours for shipping/packing costs Wink.........had a 90s with the rail mount but mangeled it getting the adapter out for my hardkrome..

i was just kidding, if you're happy with what you have, leave it alone.

If you want a Harley muffler, go to a HD shop.  They typically have take-offs. I got a used Dyna Muffler for $20.  That's about as well as you'll do on ebay and there's no shipping.  Just be sure to get the muffler without the crossover pipe.  

Used the stock mounts with some carriage bolts. I took the header pipe and muffler to a shop and they made me an adapter for $5.

I won't go so far to say I'm happy with it, I'm probably more in the arena of "this will do until I figure out what I want to do".

I'll have to make a run to a Harley dealer sometime.  The closest ones to me are about 40 miles away, so I'll have to set aside a day off and take a spin there.

Other than chasing the backfires out of it, the only REAL problem I had with the MAC was how shrill it was at high rpms.  With the MAC, I would literally go into a migraine in short order.  

Maybe such a beast doesn't exist, but I want the low RPM rumble of the MAC, and the mellow high RPM's of a stock Sportster muffler.

I've had no functional problems with my MAC but it is somewhat raucus and I'm wanting something less harsh and less loud but not something that sounds like a sewing machine.  The cheapo glasspack shorty from JCW worked pretty well but the quality is lame.  Next trial is the SE.  I got a used one from Lancer and have the adaptor made already.  I'll give it a test run within the next few weeks.  If I like the performance and sound, I'll have it ceramic coated along with the adaptor and the totally blued header I have.  If not, I'll keep trying from time to time.  In the mean time, I wear earplugs when I ride.

Hey Savage-Rob! I have a SE muffler that was supposed to go on one of their big touring bikes. Looking into the exit of it, it has 2 holes 7/8" in diameter and a small 1/4" hole. One of the holes gets daylight from the inlet when you look through. If my muffler is anything like the SE that you're putting on, I'd better warn you - it's LOUD. Sounds cool, but LOUD. I mean- if I find a good deal on a dyna muffler, I might go for it.
I checked out the newer SE mufflers and they look like straight-thru glass-packs. I wonder if anyone has tried one of those big-bore crotch-rocket cans? They flow like crazy, they're usually light, pretty quiet, and they make a four-cyl hum pretty nicely. Just a thought.

I had a slash cut Harley muffler on my '02 for only a week and changed back to a sporty from an '96. Didn't like how loud the slash cut was plus it had a loose baffle that would rattle at mid RPMs. To get a little more sound out of the sporty muffler I ended up drilling a 3/8 inch hole in the center of the baffle. So far I'm real happy with it. The exhaust note has a deep rumble at idle and a nice healthy sound while riding. I hate drilling out baffles cause if you go too big then the muffler is pretty much junk. Wouldn't recomend anything bigger than a 3/8 hole in the baffle to begin with, guess it depends on the rider as to how loud the bike is. Only changed the main jet to a 152.5, kept the rest pretty much stock except for a K+N drop in air filter. Don't want to keep fixing it till it is broke Grin. What the heck, if it is running fine, why mess with it.

Still need a sporty muffler? I have two in perfect condition. I will  sell you one at a very reasonable price. Theycame in the original screaming eagle box.  I don't   think they were on the sportster very long. They are pre 2003. I need to get some stuff out of my garage and hope someone can use this muffler. Folks have been good to help me out and I want to past it on.
