I'm curious, post open road mileage

I'm curious because there are cars now that do better MPG than I am doing on my 2002 LS.

I've been tracking my open road mileage and I get varying numbers between 46.6 and 51.2 MPG on my 2002 Savage after performing the half spacer mod and turning the covered mix screw out to 2 turns.  Pipe is neutral to very slight gold tint (pipe takes a long time to change, most times it gets a cleaning before it develops).

What sort of post-mod open road mileage do the rest of you guys get?  What color if any does your pipe develop?

A couple weeks ago, neighbor and i went on a smoke's run to the indian reservation. He rode his cavelcade an i rode Tongue"fancy"my 04 savage,I averaged 60 mpg at 70 mph there an back.126 miles one way,of all the mods i've done(see signature) the pod filter improved my milage the most.Could just be coincidence, was last mod i
did to open up air flow.My Jardine pipe is showing a hint of goldish color about 3" from coupling, about where the internal baffles start restricting the flow. When the bike was completely stock, milage was 57-58,on highway.

What's an "open road"?  Got nothing like that around here.   What speeds?  Speed is the #1 killer of gas mileage.

On the Lake Run my first leg was down the Pacific Coast Highway mostly 45-55 with slowdowns/stops in the beach communities.  Got 57 mpg.  Over the coastal range on the twisty Ortega Highway, down to Lake Elsinore, back inland via 2-lane, a few miles of freeway, and city streets.  54.2 mpg avarage for the 152 mile trip over what passes for "open roads" in urbanized SoCal.

A lot better than my normal 45 mpg or so in stop/go city traffic with a tendency to twist the throttle.

Back in the dim past I had a GS450E with a Quicksilver fairling.  On a trip from L.A. to Seatle and back I did mostly a steady 45-50 on 2-lane roads and got 80 mpg.
Perry reported similar on his Savage at similar speeds.

I seem to be running right around 58-60 MPG on a 2005 stock setup.  I commute in traffic at 40-50 MPH and do not hotdog (much ). Wink

Riding the superslab at 70 mph with my '02 I'm seeing 48 mpg at the best. This is with no windshield and agressive throttle twisting. Of course the bike is hauling around my 240 lb carcass (lost 25 lbs in the last two months) which beats the hell out of any decent gas milage. A windshield helps a lot with aerodynamics but can make a lot of noise in a full faced helmet.

Guys, thanks for the response.  Sounds simple enough,  heavy hands make for light tanks and we are all guilty .....
