Another Jetting Question!

I know everyone is sick to death of these but here goes. Just looking for confirmation I guess.
I did the mods as listed in the bottom of the post and am 2 turns out on the mix screw. I did the adjustment by turning the screw in til the idle slowed and opened til the idle slowed and the happy middle seems to be 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 turns out. Just got back from a 60 mile ride to check mileage. It is 94 degrees. Anyway, poppy backfires when closing the throttle too quickly between upshifts. I can control that by being easier on the twisty thing. Decel is pretty good with a jake brake like tone with slight pops if it's in too low a gear. No backfires on shutdown!!
When I got back I rechecked the mix setting and ended up putting  it 2 turns out so it would be on the rich side. Then I noticed the golden header(before mods) had a slight blue tinge about a 1/4 inch long from the head! Is this okay? or do I need to go to a 155 main? Or did it turn that color because  of the constant 45 to 50 mph in 94 degree heat?

Make sure those header pipe bolts are tightened where the header pipe attaches to the engine.  Maybe you have a leak that is causing your backfire.

Okay, I'll wait til it's room temp and try that. Does it sound like the jetting is right?

To me, the jetting looks right... then again, you're talkin to the guy who has battled his share of demons with it as well, so by all means am I the expert!  Grin

When you put your new muffler on, did you use a new gasket at that connection?

Here's my opinion, and it's just that -- an opinion.  The more open the muffler is that you install, the more difficult it is to chase all the pops away because of the lack of backpressure.

I had a MAC on mine, and no matter what I did I couldn't get them all gone.  When I put the Dyna muffler on, that task was made easier by at least tenfold because (I believe) of the increased backpressure the Dyna muffler provides.

Like I said, that is just my theory, but I truly believe there is something to it.  IMHO, the more open the pipe, the more important fine tuning becomes, and the harder it becomes.

The gasket on the muffler side is the original. Just 1000 miles as of today, and it went on really snug. Used the Jardine clamp and tightened to the point I didn't think it would take any more without stripping the threads. No discoloration there so I figure it's okay. I went to tighten the header pipe at the head and using the torque list I got off this sight I couldn't find a listing that sounded right except for " exhaust pipe clamp bolts". Still unsure if that was the right one (13.3 to 20.6 ft-lb) but I tried it and set the torque wrench to 15lbs and the bolt on the left ,as your facing the front of the bike, was okay. But the one on the right took a quarter turn. If I knew this was the right torque setting I could back them out and do it properly. Can someone give me the correct setting?
