Handlebar and riser replacement

I am considering purchasing a 1999 Savage with 5k miles from a local seller. He's asking $1900 and I think I can get it for $1500. I would prefer to purchase a new s40 but if I can get this bike for $1500 I think I need to pocket the remaining $2500

I would like to modify the handlebar and risers to match the stock drag bar and pull back risers on the new s40. At a Zook dealership in CO they told me that the parts would be about $200. Two Questions: (1) Is there anything "tricky" about this swap or is it pretty much a bolt on replacement. (I do not intend to recable, at least not initially) (2) Can someone recommend comparable aftermarket parts that might save me some money?

Should be a simple swap. The savage you are looking at has the Buckhorns on there now? Then you won't need to recable. Aftermarket parts tend to be pricey, but you can get cheap drag bars, maybe $30 or so, but I can't recall who makes the cheapies. most dealers have catalogues out you can paw through...

What part of Colorado? I'm up in Fort Collins. There's a couple of us near Grand Junction, too.

If you're going from buckhorns to the flat bars, watch out for the brake line. I don't know how different the S40 bars may be from the old style Savage flat bars. I got a set of '87 flats and mounted them on pullback risers and they were so narrow that the brake line hit the right riser and I couldn't rotate it enough to adjust the mirror properly. The master cylinder on the '87 had the brake line on the front while my '98 has the brake line on the left side of the master cylinder. I put wider 36" bars on and it's fine. I've found I like the wider bars a lot better but that's a personal preference. Anyway, just be aware that differences exist.

I'm in Denver, CO on business this week but I live in central Arkansas. I think the place I visited was Fay Myers on Araphoe Road.

The 1999 Savage I'm thinking about has buckhorns on it so I think it will work, provided the cautions about the brake line don't mess me up. If so I guess I could just have a shorter brake line installed.

Anyway, thanks for the responses. I hope to ride it on Saturday when I'm back in town and if I get it I'll post some pix and let you know how the swap went.

The issue is the banjo fitting being on the left side rather than the front.
