Fuel tank off/on, now fuel problems

Ok as I was trying to diagnose a starter problem, which turned out to be a blown fuse, I had pulled the tank off, disconnecting speedo cable, and line from petthingy to carb, at the carb.  After replacing fuse, checked to see if starter would work before putting tank back on.  Success, put tank back on plugged speedo back in, hooked line back on to carb.  Now I have a major fuel blockage of some kind, or I was wondering, if it could possibly air bubbles, or what I've heard vapour lock.  Seem to only be able to get bike to start by putting it on prime, constantly stalling out when releasing throttle, I think idle screw is set high, but when petthing is on position, bike just doesn't get the fuel.  What could've went wrong just from pulling the tank off?  When I am running about 50km/h - 35 miles/hr consistent pop pop pop pop backfiring.  any and all suggestions greatly appreciated

You didn't mention the vacuum line that goes from the back of the petthingy to the right side of the carb. If that line isn't on tight, the petthingy valve will not work in ON or RES positions, and there will be a vacuum leak at the carb.

Could someone narrow down exactly where this might be, I only purposely dissconnected one hose, form the carb, could this other one pop off easily on it's own?

No the line has two spring clamps on it one at each end.
Mine is covered with a spring the full length to protect it.

nevermind found it, and bike is running again......Sweet!
That line must have just popped off when we pulled the tank off.  We noticed there were some dumby hoses on top.  Should there be 2 others?

The two hoses on top that aren't connected to anything just get routed along the frame, they are vent hoses.  I just tuck mine in the wire ties that hold the cabling to the frame so they don't flop around.

Funny, I've had this savage about three weeks now, and the exact same thing happened to me...took me, and two friends about 1/2 hour to figure it out...at least it motivated me to go buy the shop manual (which I just picked up today)...so much to learn

There are some very informative topics in the Tech Ref forum that have very good photos of this stuff.  Just read the posting guidelines post beforehand.
