Heat Shield

I have all the stuff to put on my sportster muffler on 05
s40 (ls650), except the 6" extension. The muffler shop
wanted me to bring the bike in to make the extension and said they would help me mount the muffler. They wanted the heat shield off. Well I must have a case of the stupids. I pulled out the Clymer and took the bracket off. It was still on as hard as before. I tried to use my motorcycle jack and there are no flat surfaces to lift. I thought it would be easier to see what's holding this on. So the question is, what's the secret to getting this heat shield off and how do you jack this baby up?

On the stock heat shield, there is the clamp on the bottom and then there are two screws on the top back side.  After you remove those two screws the shield "snaps" on, so just a little force will make it come right off.

Just remember, two screws topside, and one clamp on the bottom side.

You probably better off taking the muffler off the header with the shield in place then remove those mentioned screws. They are rather large screw and required lot of torque to loosen it up. I couldn't even get any tool to reach it with the muffler still attached to the header.

So that means you need to have the new O ring gasket for the pipe to the head as is is a crush only once item. Taking both pieces down to the muffler shop is a good idea so they get it right the first time. If you are using a car type floor jack the support for the muffler has a nice flat spot on it that will work if you are not going to try and tug the muffler off the head pipe. Actually it can be done with the bike in the side stand, probably the second safest way. First would be with the front tire clamped in the tire vise that is on the runway type motorcycle shop lifts. Those are very secure. You will like the results I'm sure when you are done, Max

Thanks everybody! I thought I'd taken a large stupid pill
instead of my lipitor. I have a motorcycle jack that works
just perfect on my Triumph America. Just a side note. I bought the Thumper to start riding again after not riding for %&* years. Thought about selling her after getting the Triumph, but enjoy her so much, had to keep her.
Now I know how to get the heat shield off & proceed with the mods. Questions is can you love two girls at once the little Thumper and  the beautiful Triumph America?

Definitely, that Triumph is a sweet bike!  8)  I also like the Moto Guzzi Nevada Classic 750.

Thanks everybody for all the help. The TBA is greenwood
with silver on tank and the silver pinstripped in gold. I'm
learning on the thumper and hope to do some mods on the TBA. It sure helps starting out jetting a single carb and dealing with one muffler. Man,  how blessed can a person be with great little thumper to ride in town, a Triumph to ride on the road and a Boston Whaler to fish with. My garage runneth over. Mid life may not be that
bad. Thanks again for all the advice. I just want the Thumper to be everything she can be.
