Possible Ignition Timing Mod
08/21/06 at 10:25:32
Hey gang,
Been thinking about a way to advance or retard the ignition timing. Anyone use a Dyna 2 or 3000 on any of their other bikes? I want ot get one for my V* 1100, but no cash. Anyway, these are little computers that replace the stock computer (in our case, the "ignitor" module), and there are about 7 timing curves that you can select from, plus set the redline with a dial. Assumming that the signal from the savage's generator is the same (or someone, maybe me, could design a little circuit), one could then (easily?) take one output from the Dyna and send it to the coil (a better coil would be a good upgrade too!) and take the other and send it to a dead end (e.g. a 1 MOhm, or 100 MOhm load).
Any thoughts?
Also, does the ignitor unit electronically control the redline? uh, someone please remind me what the redline is...

That's when your engine is getting close to Blowing apart. The Savage's part tolarence is not built as a racing bike. Going above the redline is asking for trouble

found time for a search: redline = 6500 rpm.
But is this controlled by the ignitor unit? i.e. does it cut off spark if the rpm exceeds 6500?

There is a revlimtiter on a stock Savage, but I have dissconected that one long ago, if I remember, its 2 cabels on the right side under the seat that you can dissconect if you dont want the rev limeter.

I was thinking the same thing Ike. They do that mod to the 750s too. These bikes would respond real well to a little more ignition advance. I wouldn't look to extended your redline though. You'll probably grenade your engine (ask Torque
).

Torques engine did not die from over-reving, he was at idle at a stop sign when it came apart.
I have not disconnected anything in my wiring harness but my engine will go beyond 7000 without difficulty when on a power run. It has hit 7,300 rpm in 1st and 2nd on several runs. I do not do those runs often like that as the power curve starts down at 6500 rpm.
I would love to be able to advance the timing, that would help a lot.

So you don't think all those trips to the burnout pit and flogging it down the road contributed to his grenading his engine? Maybe parts weakened by too much abuse? What I'm saying is there have been a few lower end failures on this and other boards. Revving past redline on these bikes is counterproductive. Besides, the stock porting and cam profile is mild and these engines run out of steam at high rpms. No point to passing redline in most cases.
Now increasing advance is another story. One would gain alot of bottom end and seat of the pants kick. Fuel economy generally goes up too with more advance. Perhaps one would have to run midgrade or high test gas but it would be a worthwhile mod.

I was not familiar with his flogging/burnout sessions, but that certainly create a question about the engine condition.
Advancing the ignition should make a heck of a difference in performance. I am anxcious to get that added to the list of mod's on my bike.

Would it be possible to file the holes in the ignition pickup and get a couple degrees that way, I'm thinking of that at KLX's next oil change.

Took a look at a picture of an ignition pickup module in the tech section and it looks like it is mounted by two screws that go thru a piece of flat metal into the side cover. Can't think of any reason why you couldn't cut the holes in the flat stock into slots and slide the pickup to advance the timing. Which way would be advance, counterclockwise?

From the left side, the flywheel turns ccw, so to advance the ignition (i.e. to spark earlier), one would move the pickup cw.
